ok-
my great friend gave me his Xbox because he was getting a new one! thanks bro! so i go out and buy halo 2....
<pops in disk> <whistles excitedly> <?> what? the disk is brand new... its not dirty...
i ended up trying it about 100 times (minimum) and it worked once, and after i beat the third level it interrupted my game with the error and made me stop playing. What a good friend to give me his piece of crap Xbox!
Can anyone help me with my problem? Is there a way i can fix it without spending hundreds of dollars?
please help

Hmmm. So your friend just gave you an X-box and then went and bought a new one?
Then you find out yours dont work?
Makes complete sense to me.

Yeah... The great friend knew that the drive was taking a crap on him. It's a common problem for older X-box's. I'd try cleaning it first, but I doubt it's going to work.
New cd-drive is likely your only option.

I had the same exact problem. I think you can send it in to Microsoft or something and they will fix it (for a price of course), but I didn't feel like waiting the month or whatever to get it back...so I bought a new one. I don't remember who told me this, but my problem was that the lens was scratched, thus making it very hard for the Xbox to read the disk. You get the "dirty or damaged disk" error message, when in fact it is the Xbox itself that is damaged. My advice is to shell out the $150 or whatever it is now, if you can, and get a new XBox.
Your xbox probably has a thompson drive.. its crap.. buy a new drive for it on ebay thats not Thompson.. you can get them for around $40 (phillips aor samsung)
You should be good for a while once you replace the drive... (samsung is better if you were wondering)
You can also buy a modded drive that will play cd-r's and dvd-r's... but thats another thing..
dunno how I missed this thread..

Ok, good. In my opinion, you're an idiot. Good thing I can't be wrong!

When I looked into it...I remember you could self mod...Or buy premodded one...There was a specific samsung one that everyone wants...Cant remember it now...Cash may know. You can go ebay...Or type in the name of the specific drive (Sorry I cant think of it now) its like DV9 or something...Into google and itll hit you with a lot....you may even be able to buy them from that www.llamma.com link...He can also teach you to mod from my recollection.
Youll be looking at around 70 quid...so like 100 bucks for a good un...the more you pay tho, the better you are likely to be getting...
