The Houston Texans General Manager, Matt, strides into the room with a slight smile on his face.
"Hello, and welcome all. The past few seasons, the previous regime has told you that we would be building, building around Andre Johnson. He was the face of the franchise. Andre's gone now. We're realistic here. This team is not going to go out and play in the Super Bowl. This team is not going to go 16-0. This team is not going to lead the league in offense. This team is not going to lead the league in defense. This team will not lead the league in points scored. But we WILL compete.
I know what you're thinking. No Andre Johnson, no Seth Payne, no HUGE names. But this team is young, and fast. Those are two things that can't be taught.
At Quarteback we return David Carr, who, entering his 5th season, looks to be much improved. He has a strong arm which is good, because our receivers are fast and love to catch.
At running back we return Domanick Davis. Domanick brings a unique blend of power and speed. Two young backs, Lundy and Gado, will spell Davis and take the short yardage situation. Our running game will set up our passing game, so its integral that we keep each of them fresh for the whole year.
One word you keep hearing me using is speed. With Ashlie Lelie, Drew Carter, and Jerome Mathis, whats not to like? We feel that their speed will allow us to strech defenses and cause match-up problems week after week. I guarantee there is not a secondary around that can match up with us in that aspect. Owen Daniels does the same thing at the tight end position. He and David have developed a bond this off season and have clicked from the get-go. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he leads the team in catches.
Our offensive line is a position that has provided us with much ridicule over the past couple of years. This year, we bring back veterans-McKinney, Flanagan, and Pitts- with two young tackles flanking them on either side. We realize that this could once again be a problem area for us. However, we feel that they're stronger run blockers than pass blockers and hope that setting up a running game will allow us to pass the ball.
On defense, we're starting perhaps the youngest front 4 in all of the NFL. Mario Williams and his speed, and Anthony Weaver and his size, provide us with two great pass rushers. Travis Johnson, and Jay Ratliff are two big stoppers who we belive will clog up the running game for opposing teams, and force them to throw.
At linebacker, we'll start another high pick from this year- Demeco Ryans, as well as speedsters Keyaron Fox, and Morlon Greenwood. I think that these guys match up with just about any from across the NFL.
The key to our defense though, is our secondary. We are not worried about Dunta Robinson. But Cris Crocker moved over and is learning the cornerback position. Glenn Earl and C.C. Brown are young safeties who will be starting for the first time. It is imperative that our defense stop the run so that we can keep as many people in coverage as possible.
We're young. We'll make mistakes. We'll lose games we should win. But we'll probably steal a few as well. Most experts have us with the worst record in the league. I'm glad. No need for these guys to get a big head. I can't wait for the season.
With that being said, I will now take any questions.
With telling that most league experts saw your team as one of the worst in their predictions before the league starts, what do you personally think will be the record of your team look like and what are your goals for this season and for the next 2 seasons?

I have nothing but good memories of playing for the Bills. It's something I cherish. When I was playing for the Pats, I'd wear a Bills T-shirt under my uniform. Someone came up to me one day and said, 'Fred, no matter what you wear on the outside, you,ll always be a Buffalo Bill on the inside.'
You emphasised your speed at WR and how David and certain players have developed a bond. Do you feel enough has been done on that offensive line so we don't see a repeat of last year?

This team has the ability to compete with anybody. At this time, I cannot put a number on that. Our goal this season is to stay in games, while getting the young guys some time. Our hope that is with the youth this year, and plent of cap space, we can be a playoff contender next season, and hopefully go further than that in the succeeding years.

No, we hadn't planned it. Andre was the consumate team player, and he gave everything he had. When the deal came, we were blown away. We felt it was in our, and his best interest to move on in different directions.

THe line has held up well so far. As I mentioned though, it will be up to our running backs to hit the holes quick and open things up for our passing game. If our line can help us estsablish a running game, the rest will follow.
It's a little early perhaps, but what do you think will be some of the off-season moves that you'll make to further improve your team? Also, do you plan to rely heavily on Free Agency or the Draft to help your team grow?
Obviously, we'd like to sure up the secondary and offensive line. We have a couple of first rounders and a large amount of capspace, so we feel confident that we can get it done.
