Texans Week 1 Press Conference

Texans GM Shawn Wilson enters the room and takes a seat, and pulls out a stat sheet for the Week 1 game

Man, what a way to start off the season. We started off the year on the right foot with a win, and a very dramatic one at that.

We found ourselves down 17-3 with two minutes left in the 2nd quarter. After being ineffective for the entire first 28 minutes of the game, Carr finally figured things out and did a great job engineering a nice drive that unfortunately fell short at around the 25 yard line. We had to settle for a field goal, which made the score 17-6.

Our offense started off the 2nd half just as it did the 1st, they were completely flat. We needed a game changing play...and that's just what we got, courtesy of 2nd year CB Derrick Johnson's first career interception, which he took to the house for a touchdown. That made the score 17-13. Our D stepped it up on the Jags next drive, and we were able to prevent them from scoring. Our offense got the ball again, and again we got a nice drive going. But again, the drive stalled short of the end zone, and we were forced to kick another FG.

Down 17-16 with about half of the 3rd quarter left to go, we engaged in a defensive battle with the Jags. Neither one of us could get anything going. That is, until the beginning of the 4th quarter. We got yet another strong drive going, but yet AGAIN, the drive stalled...this time at about the 35 yard line. We brought John Kasay in for the 51 yard FG, but it fell way short. That gave the Jags extremely good field position, but our D escalated their play to a whole new level and forced a 3 and out. But their D wasn't giving way either, and they did a nice job of stopping us, and when they got the ball back, they we're effective in running the clock down with their power back Kay Jay Harris. When we got the ball again, there was only about 2 and a half minutes left, and it was pretty clear that we needed a score on this drive. And a score is exactly what we got...we mixed it up with some Carr throws, both short and long, but also handed the ball to Bennett a few times and caught the D off guard. The drive ended in a 5 yard TD pass to the newest Texan, Robert Ferguson. A two point conversion put us up 24-17, and a Joey Galloway interception on the Jags last drive sealed the deal.

Quite an exciting game it was. Standouts on offense were David Carr, who threw for 275 yards and a TD, but also had a boneheaded INT in the first quarter. Michael Bennett picked up 90 yards on 24 carries, which isn't bad but also isn't great. Robert Ferguson led the receiving corps with 9 catches for 113 yards and the game winning TD.

On defense, Joey Porter led the team in tackles with 10 and also forced a fumble. Joey Galloway had 8 tackles and the game sealing INT. But he had a hard time covering Troy Brown, who went over 100 yards on him. Robaire Smith, Shaun Ellis, and rookie CJ Mosely had sacks. But the defensive player of the game was Derrick Johnson, our nickelback who ran back his first career INT for a TD.

I think that just about covers everything. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask...

Was Bennett's lackluster performance due to poor vision or due to lack of hole opened by the offensive line? Do you see his touches going down if there is a continued lack of production?

With a great comeback against a stout defensive team like the Jags, how much confidence does this give to a young team especially a maturing QB like Carr?

Lack of production? He got the ball 24 times for 90 yards, which is an average of 3.8 YPC. Now, I know those aren't the greatest stats he's ever had, but I'm not at all upset with his performance.

But, on the plays that he failed to get yards, I think he failed to use his speed to outrun the defense. There were time when he could have easily outran a linebacker to the outside, but instead tried to juke or spin back inside, and got tackled. He needs more confidence in his speed and he needs to use that world class speed to his advantage more often.

If you're talking about Jay Foreman's first week at DT for the Giants...I think he needs more time to adapt to the position. He only had 2 tackles, and Shaun Alexander ran all over Big Blue for 174 yards. You gotta take into account the fact that the Giants only picked him up not to long ago, so he may not have learned all the "tricks of the trade" so to speak of the DT position. But I know from his time here that he's a hard worker and he can do anything he puts his mind to, and we wish him luck at his new position.

Any more questions?

yes, the other reporter has a question too, but my question how much did this division win boost your confidence?

For Madden people the best way to explain it is that he has a very low awareness.

Its always a confidence booster when you can come back from a 2 TD deficit, and the morale of our locker room is definitley up. But believe me, Coach Johnson won't let it get to the point where it goes to their heads. They're excited about the comeback, but they understand that its just one win and we still have 15 games to play.

Well me, personally, I have high expectations of this team and I expected nothing less than a win in Week 1. And that's no disrespect to the Jaguars, who arguably outplayed us everywhere but the score. It was a tight game, and if they got a break or two I might not be standing here talking about a win.

But it definitley gives us momentum heading into yet another big divisional matchup next week, against the Indianapolis Colts. And trust me, we're gonna need all the momentum we can get...

Thanks for the questions guys, any more?

So next game is Indy...What are the implications so early on with a win or loss there, in relevance to the division?

Every game is important, but none are more important then divisional matchups. We've been thrown two of them in the first two weeks, so its pretty safe to say that what we do here out of the gate will have a big impact on the rest of our season.

I think we have the chance to make a statement against Indy next week. There's nobody that doesn't think Tennessee and Indy are the two top teams in the AFC South, and its really hard for even me to disagree with them. But if we can pull out an upset over Indy, not only would it probably change people's opinions of us, but it would also be the biggest confidence booster that our team could possibly get.

If we lose, as expected by the media, I think it will hurt the team's morale. They know how big this game is for us, and they know what a win here can do for us.

Thanks for the question, any others?
