Kansas City Chiefs Week 1 Press Conference

Coach Saunders walks in and takes a seat.

Welcome to the first press conference of the year. I'm glad it's after such a huge win. I talked to the players before the game and I made sure they knew of all of the implications coming from this game. A division rivalry, beating the team that most people picked to win the division, making a statement that the Chiefs aren't playing around, and doing all of this on the opponent's field. I especially tried to hammer my message through to Trent, because he is considered by most people to be past his prime, and now he was receiving his shot to lead us to victory.

Trent definitely did his part in the first half. He was great, he completed pass after pass and led us to 13 points. His 25 yarder set up a Priest Holmes 1 yard TD run, which was a good way to make a statement. Priest didn't get much going in this game, but we expected that with the way the Raiders play defense and just trusted Trent to carry us down the field. The defense was amazing, with an impressive goal line stand-3 plays from the one yard line. At halftime we were up 13-3 and happy with the way things were going.

The second half was a little bit different. Priest still couldn't get anything going as the Raiders kept lining up 8 or 9 in the box on almost every 1st and 2nd down. Trent was still completing passes, but too many 3rd and longs were 8 yard passes. I can't tell you how many times we ended up with 4th and less than 2. The defense really went crazy here. David Barrett picked one off and took it all the way home to get us a 20-3 lead, and on the very next possession Tank Williams picked one off. That drive resulted in a FG, giving us a 23-3 score. The defense just continued to punish the Raiders, and didn't allow a score til 1:30 left in the game.

I'd have to say I'm pretty happy with my team. They gave a very good team a pretty solid beating. Trent proved that he can still complete a pass or two, throwing no INT's. Shawn Barber led the defense with 14 tackles and a FF, and Boss Bailey had 8 tackles. What's most impressive is the rookie Kwakou Robinson. In limited usage he recorded 2 sacks. If our defense can continue to play the way we did it will be very tough for any team to beat us.

Any questions?

It seemed like their Dline was getting pressure on Trent all day...What happened there?

Over the past two years, Trent's play has been spotty at best... Is it his job to lose and if so how long is his leash?

I think a lot of it was the amount of blitzers Oakland was coming with. Like I said, they lined up with 8 or 9 in the box on most plays, and a lot of times they were bringing extra blitzers. I think as our line gets used to the new C we'll get better at fighting the blitzes off, and we might need to keep some people in to help with blocking until then.

Priest Holmes was limited to a disappointing 36 yards on 30 carries. Was this poor running, poor blocking or exceptional defense?

With 3 forced fumbles and only one recovered what needs to be addressed to ensure that your team makes the most of all of its turnover opportunities?
