Panthers Week One Press Conference

Coach Fox walks into the press room to talk about todays game.

Well the team played well and brought in a win. Its always nice to start the season out with a W. Our Defense was superb. Not any one guy made all the plays. It was a team effort and the speed and tackling of those guys out there was tremendous. They kept Jake and Cedric off balance almost the entire game. Our D didnt want to let Jake come into our house and have a good game.

Jerry Azumah was tremendous for us. He returned an INT for a touchdown, and he recovered a fumble for a touchdown as well. Our staff made the right decision keeping him in the secondary. He really made a huge difference in todays game.

Our running game was just phenomonal. Foster came out and performed very well. Dallas had some nice blitz packages that confused us at times, but Foster just pounded away. Kudos to the offensive line for never giving up and just pounding it against the good Dallas D.

We did lose Charlie for an as of yet undetermined amount of time. He will be re-evaluated on Monday and we will let you know more when we know what exactly is going on with him. We have Drew and he will continue to play well for the Panthers.

Any Questions?

First, I'd like to say I haven't seen that Panthers defense play like that in a couple years. What lit the fire?

And...

There really wasn't alot of controversy, well not as much as expected, between the two QB's. Do you think it'll be a problem later when Charlie is healthy if Drew continues to play at the level he finished the game with?

I think what lit the fire was that almost every single prediction that was printed had them as a bunch of guys that were going to be outplayed in just about every game. They just wanted to prove that they could play very well and I think they did that today.

We just played our game focused and executed. Our young guys played very well too, and that really helped us. I didnt have any doubts that they would perform, but I am very pleased.

There is no controversy at quarterback. Charlie is our starter. I told Drew that after the game and he completely understands. We are in a unique position that we can bring Whitehurst back without trying to rush him back in and possibly getting him hurt again.

First off, I want to congratulate you and your team on a dominating performance.

If I really wanted to nitpick and see a negative for your team in Week 1, it would probably be Ben Jones' two missed field goals. How secure is his job at kicker, and is there any chance we may see a free agent signing to replace him?

No he did well.
His two misses were 49 and 55 yards.

Thats not bad for any kicker. Plus for a few of his kicks it was raining like crazy so he did really well for us.

Was the offensive gameplan as simple as give it to DeShaun? Did you expect him to have such a tremendous game?

Well we wanted the offense to be balanced to take pressure off of Charlie in his first start. We know Foster can is a good back, and has the talent to be one of the best in the league. We thought if we held our blocks and pressured Dallas' linebackers that he could have a successful day. I didnt think he would have had a day like he did, but we just kept grinding the ball and he broke out a couple big runs. Foster at times is a stud. Hopefully he can keep it up all season.

Our game play will be the same. Brees and Whitehurst are similar and they both know their responsibilities. All year they have split snaps with the first team so they both could be ready.

You know there is some luck in every game. The main thing is we were focused and prepared and being that brings luck sometimes. If people want to think we only won on luck then Ill just tell them to watch the rest of the season. It is only week one. If we lose the rest of our games, then maybe we were lucky. I just dont think luck is the main factor in any win. Sometimes it helps but its not the main reason.

What do you think was the big reason Foster was able to break a couple of long runs? Do you feel that what appeared to be constant blitzing from the Cowboys helped Foster find the holes and exploit it for big gains?

I think that our guys just blocked really well on his first big run getting a hand on everyone. Yeah Dallas was blitzing, but Foster only had to break one tackle on that big run.

Dallas did blitz very aggresively, and that helped, but Foster is a good back and if he gets a lane, he can run with the best of em.
