Coach Al Saunders walks in, accompanied by GM Rocky Balboa. Rocky takes the podium.
Hello ladies and gentlemen. We have had a very eventful offseason, and this is the first press conference because I didn't want to end up doing multiple conferences for the offseason. Let's start off with the coaching... we promoted Al Saunders to head coach when Coach Vermiel decided to leave. Coach Saunders has been one of the best OCs in the league and we know he'll make a successful jump.
We feel our offseason has been very successful. In the draft we acquired some solid talent. Darryl Blackstock, who was originally an OLB but we feel he's better suited for the DE position, at least for now, so he'll be starting there for us. DJ Shockley will immediately challenge for the QB spot. Gilbert Harris will replace the retired Tony Richardson. Robinson will see some time at the DE position and Allen will compete for the nickelback slot. We like the future of our other picks as well...
As you may know, we lost a strong part of our line in C Casey Weigmann. We wish him luck, but we just didn't have the funds to pursue him in free agency. Bober has backed him up for a while now, and hasn't been shy about telling us how much talent he has. Now's his time to show it. We also lost a key defensive player in OLB Scott Fujita. To replace him we brought in the younger, faster Boss Bailey. Boss is lightning quick and will make a lot of plays from the backside. We're very excited about our new look on D.
Also, our secondary is very strong and flexible at the same time. Julian Battle can play FS and CB like a beast, and it seems as if he'll be starting this year at FS.
All in all, we're really excited about the season. I'll now turn it over to Coach Saunders for your questions.
Owner/GM Rocky Balboa leaves the room

Coach Saunders, do u feel that Trent Green is washed up? Or Alex Smith not good enough to be your QB to have Shockley already competing? Is it because of his deceptive speed? One more question, what number will Blackstock be?

Well, let's see... Trent threw more INT's than TD's, which isn't hard when you only throw 12 TD's and only completed around 51% of his passes. So what do you think Mr. Hotshot reporter? Do you think he's washed up?
Alex Smith on the other hand, he led us to some playoff victories, and as the offensive coordinator last year I thought he would be getting better with every game. However, he was unable to learn from his experience in the playoffs, and if he can't do that then I don't know if there's a future for him in the NFL. Maybe Shockley will light a fire under his ***. If not, Shockley will start. Smith and Shockley will battle it out in preseason, and whoever has the better numbers will start.
Blackstock... initially he wanted to be in the single digits, we were thinking #2, just to get crazy, but there was an issue with the commissioner's brother, and we don't want to get our hard working commish all riled up. Then we were thinking he could be double zero, but of course that's not legal in the league, so he'll probably wind up in the 50's somewhere.

Your defense is clearly built on speed that is matched by very few teams in the league, how do you feel you match up with teams that will run at them? Which leads me to my second question, Do you feel Darryl Blackstock has the size at D end to hold up to the bigger tackles in the game or the double teams? Last question : How do you match up with other teams in your divison... who is the early top dog
How many wins do you think it will take win the division?

For Madden people the best way to explain it is that he has a very low awareness.

I feel our D is good enough to stop the run. Morrison, Barber, and Bailey have all proven they can step up and make plays, and Morrison and Barber are familiar with the defense. Tank is one of the best safeties in the league, he'll make some big plays, and our D-line is pretty good... Sims, Holliday, and Swancutt all made big plays last year and will do the same this year.
I think Blackstock's big enough to play the DE position. He's 6-4, and what he lacks in weight he makes up for in strength. He's just as strong as Hicks, and Hicks was a beast last year. Plus he's the most athletic DE in the league, most tackles won't have seen a guy like him. His speed will lead him to make big plays, plus he'll have help from our LB's.
Our division is insane... there really is no top dog. Every single team in the division competed for the playoffs last year, and I'm sure it will be the same.

I wish I knew... it could be 13, could be 10. It all depends on what happens in division. We've been known to beat the hell out of eachother, it will be tough for any team to escape with a good record in the division. But when it comes to the quality of these teams, I think it's the toughest division in the league.
