Bengals week 4 Press Conf.

Marvin Lewis enters the room and takes a seat...

Press) Good game coach.

Lewis) A win is always good, this team has some stuff it needs to work on and we will be getting on that this week.

Press) What was your mindset down 10-0 in the second quarter? What did you tell your players?

Lewis) Well, it's not like it was haltime so I don't have a lot of time to talk with the players. I talked to Drew and told him we needed to do something on offense. We had a good stand there on that first drive of thiers, held them to a fg after three plays inside the 10. Thats what I like to see from my defense. What I don't like is the big plays that got them there in the first place. Then they get the ball back and drive down on us and score again. We can't play like that early, the teams in this league won't usually let you get away with that. I went to the defense and told them they owed me some, they gave up those big plays and I wanted to see them make thier own, I wanted them to even the score against that offense with some big plays of thier own. Its like, your down ten zero you might as well take some chances to win this thing, whats the worste that can happen? A win is a win and a loss is a loss, if we lose big because we are trying to win, oh well.

Press) So on the first touchdown pass, was that something you guys saw or was that just a broken coverage on thier part?

Coach) Drew said to me, 'coach, they are dropping the safeties down in the flats to much to shut down Marshal', so I figured we'd send a body down the hashes deep to make them pull the safeties back, and instead they left him open and drew hit him, those players made a great play. This game eventually comes down to players playing.

Press) Then the Browns drove down again and scored again, that has to be demoralizing.

Coach) At that point I saw a few things we were doign wrong and just wanted to get the team into the locker room to correct some things... but Drew told me he knew he could get us there again, he saw something in the way that strong safety was playing and he picked on him again with that long pass on the right, then marshal walked it in.

Press) How about the Interecpetion thrown just before half time?

Coach) That was a combination my fault and Drew making a bad read. We got the ball back and we were in scoring postion before the half. We could have went into that locker room tied, but I knew if we could go in with the lead we should be able to shore up the things we were doing wrong on defense and get another W. So I told them to go for it (the endzone) and Drew made a bad read and thier DB made a gret play.

Press) Whatever you told that D must have worked at halftime.

Coach) Like I said I knew what they were doing and saw what we needed to fix, so the coaches told the players what to do, and we have some great players on this team in terms of listening and learning, they did what we told them, and we got a few picks in the second half.

Press) The fumble near the end of the game, (with about three miutes left). what were your thoughts at that time?

Coach) You know last week you guys were asking me when I'm going to let Drew air it out, and I told you these receivers are young, young players make mistakes, and thats what that was. It's easy to fall into the trap of just running the ball with an 8 point lead, but somethimes you have to play to win, the other team is keying on Marshal at that point, and a pass play makes sense. They didn't read the play, it was a completion and would have been a good gain. Like I said thier are some things we need to work on this week. Fortunately our defense picked up the slack with that 4th down INT, then marshal went to work and we ran it out...
