Although one of the more dormant teams this offseason, the Packers still managed to pull off a few moves this offseason. Position battles have already begun in full force as new signees WR Tyrone Calico, HB Aveion Cason and LB Ryan Fowler were added to the roster. In order to make room, HB PJ Pope, WRs Carlyle Holliday and Chris Francies, and CBs Patrick Dendy and Jarett Bush we released earlier this week.
"We felt we really needed an upgrade for when we go into three and four receiver sets this season and Tyrone (Calico) fit the bill," new Packers' GM, Tom La Rocque commented when asked about the team's offseason moves. "Ryan (Fowler) filled a hole, simple as that. With Ahman, Noah and Vernand well in place our 4th won't be seeing too much action with the offense and it was for this reason that Aveion (Cason) was brought in and PJ had to go. We feel his overall speed on the field will provide us with a solid kick returner that PJ otherwise couldn't provide."
Dendy and Bush's departures are likely caused by the influx of personnel on defense. Big name defensive backs Charles Woodson and Marquand Manuel were brought in to start for this team, as well as the drafting of CB Will Blackmon. Cornerbacks Courtland Finegan and William Bartee also coming in through trades, Dendy and Bush have found themselves as the odd men out.
Other notable moves include many new faces on the defensive line. On offense is the departure of center Scott Wells, to be repaced by former-tackle Kevin Barry. He will be sandwiched by a pair of rookie guards in Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge. Meanwhile, the defense has two new starting tackles in Ryan Pickett and Keith Traylor.
"These moves, coupled with the drafting of linebacker AJ Hawk and receiver Greg Jennings...both of whom have impressed us immensely thus far, have the whole town buzzing with excitement for the new season."

Hello Randy Rogers from Green Bay Press Gazette. How long do you expect Brett Favre too play in the NFL and has Aaron Rodgers impressed you enough thus far in camp to slowly work him into the offense?

Talking with Brett earlier this week, I got the impression that he is very excited to come back and play this year. Beyond that, it remains to be seen. He will retire when he wants to retire. Concerning Aaron, he is coming along, but we'd rather give him time to grow behind Brett while we can. He is not quite ready to lead the offence and there's no sense rushing him.

"Hello Mr. La Roque. With your RB Ahman Green only having 1 year of contract left and 29 years of age, what are your plans for him for next season. Any thought about that already?"

I have nothing but good memories of playing for the Bills. It's something I cherish. When I was playing for the Pats, I'd wear a Bills T-shirt under my uniform. Someone came up to me one day and said, 'Fred, no matter what you wear on the outside, you,ll always be a Buffalo Bill on the inside.'

At this time we have not had a chance to look at our options as to what other halfbacks will become available at the end of the season. We would really like Ahman to rejoin us next year, but if his price becomes unreasonable we will search the free agents and draftees for a suitable replacement. We will look into this further as the season goes on.

We have tried to do a combination of the two...we have a number of younger players under contract for years to come, but at the same time we decided to bring in a couple players to help bolster our weaker points for this season. In particular, Keith Traylor will provide support on the defensive line though for how many more years we can't be sure.

How do you feel Rookie A.J. Hawk will fair this season?

For Madden people the best way to explain it is that he has a very low awareness.

We are very confident in A.J. as well as a number of our other rookies. He provides a third link in our very youthful, and very talented linebacking core. With him and Barnett, we should have a solid unit for some time.
