INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Injured Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. made his first public appearance since his motorcycle crash, and his father used the occasion Friday night to lambaste the media for its coverage of the accident.
The 21-year-old Winslow tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he wrecked his high-powered motorcycle May 1 while doing tricks in a secluded parking lot near his home. He will miss all of next season.
Winslow Jr., who missed 14 games as a rookie with a broken right leg, will undergo surgery in the next few weeks.
Shortly after arriving at an auction and roast celebrating the Browns' 1964 NFL championship team, the former first-round pick, who didn't limp, said he didn't want to talk to waiting reporters.
"No," he said politely. "I'm good."
Kellen Winslow Sr., who drove his son to the event and escorted him into the hotel, initially said he would not comment, either. However, a few hours later, the Hall of Famer changed his mind.
The former San Diego Chargers star angrily accused the media of turning the younger Winslow's accident and recovery into a spectacle.
"I'm disappointed in the way you guys have handled it. Twenty-one-year-old people make mistakes," he said. "He made a mistake. You made it a circus. Remember when you were 21? A human being at 21 makes mistakes. He's not a piece of property."
Winslow Sr. was asked if he expected his son to make a full recovery.
"It's a long career," he said. "I played nine years in the National Football League. Technically, I played six years — two strikes, two major injuries and I came out OK. We look at it as a long-term career.
"You guys look at it as a moment in time and you blow it out of proportion. This Jerry Springer mentality of journalism, you guys are better than that. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Presidents make mistakes. Senators make mistakes. Journalists, if you still call yourselves that, make mistakes."
As his father was speaking in the hallway, Kellen Winslow Jr. was inside the ballroom listening to a speech by Hall of Fame Browns running back Jim Brown.
Because Winslow Jr. breached a "dangerous activities" clause in his contract by getting hurt while riding a motorcycle, the Browns may try to recoup some of the bonus money they have paid him.
LOL I heard the actual audio of it and Winslow Sr made a fool of himself and made Jr look like a punk who has daddy to fend of the media.

Make millions of dollars to play a game... Do stupid things to get your bones broke, which of course messes up the ability to play the game... Eh...
It's like smoking and being a professional football player, just plain stupid.

In two years he'll have played exactly 2 games. Sometimes **** just happens, but most of the time **** happens because you do dumb things to make it happen, Winslow might be one of those for some time. I think he has another dumb instance in him or two.
Wasn't he supposed to be a motha****ing soldier. how does a mother****ing soldier sit out two seasons in a row man. Its a war and he's gotta be out there.

To a certain extent, I can understand that he is 21 years old, and young people sometimes do stupid things. I know if the media covered every stupid thing I did when I was 21, they would still be talking about it. I guess the difference is that I wasn't a pro athlete, who's team depended on me to beable to perform with my body. He probably feels terrible about it, and that is why his dad tried to get the media to back off. That or he is just a spoiled brat, and his daddy has to come and defend him every time he ***** up. Either way, I thought this was the most interesting line:
I also heard the actual audio on ESPN for this... and it just made Winslow Jr. look dumb. I didn't think Winslow Sr. made a fool of himself though... but for Winslow Jr. to have his dad come out and handle his business is not what you'd expect from a pro football player.

It's true that he's only 21, and 21-year-olds make mistakes...but he'll have to learn the lesson the hard way. I really hope the Browns get the money back, that'll teach him. Yes, it was a dumb mistake, and now all that talent will go to waste for yet another season.
He was old enough to sign a contract to play pro-football. Age is not an excuse.

well i would have been fine with him doing tricks and that stuff if he was wearing helmet and protective gear but he was not wearing any of that. He deserves some money to be taken away from him
He was old enough to sign a contract to play pro-football. Age is not an excuse.
Your old enough to sign an NFL contract at 18.
I was old enough to buy cigs at 18 sign a contract if given to me, that still didn't stop me from spending a few nights locked up for beating the crap out of someone. If i was at the same moment today, I say there is a 95% chance i wouldn't of done it (I would say 100 but he might of said something as I tried to walk away to push me over the top).
I'm not making excuses, but sometimes age is a factor in the DUMB choices me make. We know we're doing something wrong, we just feel that nothing's ever going to happen
I'm in no way shape or form defending Winslow, since I think he's an idiot because I would be extra careful had I been a pro athelete, I'm just making an excuse for the rest of us who have done stupid ****. I know I done more than my fair share.
I still contend that age is not an excuse. At 18 you know what you are doing and you know the consequences. You may not have a reason such as kids or a job to be responsible so you do stupid things. But I think if I signed a contract for Millions of Dollars and all I had to do was stay out of trouble to get the money, I wouldnt be doing anything stupid.
