Deangelo Williams- No Heisman Chance?

Forget Adrian Peterson, Forget Cedric Benson. There is only one NCAA running back that deserves the Doak Walker Award or even the Heisman. his name is Deangelo Williams, from the University of Memphis. Let's look at these three backs.
Name Team G Rush Yds Y/G Avg TD

DeAngelo Williams Memp 11 295 1828 166.2 6.2 21
Cedric Benson Tex 11 303 1764 160.4 5.8 19
Adrian Peterson Okla 11 286 1671 151.9 5.8 12

Adrian Peterson only scored 12 Touchdowns... but he's the frontrunner for the Heisman? Deangelo leads in all major categories here. However, he was excluded from not only the Heisman but the Doak Walker award as well. The final DWA spot was given to JJ Arrington.

J.J. Arrington Cal 10 233 1584 158.4 6.8 14

Finally, someone with a better stats than DeAngelo. he has a .6 yard per carry advantage. But does that make him the better running back? DeAngelo may go pro this year, and in my opinion, there is no doubt he is a top ten pick, much like LaDanian Tomlinson a few years ago without the glitz. I have personally watched DeAngelo break records this year, and there is no doubt in my mind that he is the best running back in the nation.

Each of these three guys has faced a top 25 rush defense once. Benson ran for 95 against Oklahoma. Peterson hit 240 agaisnt texas, and deangelo hit 224 against Louisville. But DeAngelo has at least been consistent, and able to score.

Well what we are saying our opinion is.. is that he wouldn't have the numbers Peterson or Benson have...

I hate having to spell stuff out.. but I guess I have to remember to...

Plus, Adrian Peterson rushed for 100yrds in like 9 straight games. Plus over 250 in two of them, and he plays in much more balanced offense, and he not so much the heartbeat of the offense, OU throws some too. My point is that Benson and Peterson are surrounded by great players and their teams, where as in Memphis, there might be only a few, thats why he has the numbers, he is the bulk of their offense.

Thats the point, he isnt the bulk of their offense. For a few weeks, before an injury, Danny Wimprine was 7th in the nation in passing yards. And Williams had a 13 game 100 yard streak broken this year when he got hurt in a game. If he stays next year and doesnt get hurt, there is no doubt he will be a heisman candidate. He has been in the top 3 the nation in rushing 2 years in a row.

yeah, i get it... same thing when tomlinson played at TCU, or moss and pennington at marshall, or a few years ago, isaac bruce at memphis, or half of the guys in the NFL who turned out better than the andre wares or the danny wuerffels, regardless of the competition.

Sorry but until someone proves themselves against top level competition it doesnt justify them getting the heisman...

Get real man that is weak and if I wanted to waste my time I would rip it apart by going through current stars in the NFL and using seeing what teams they came from in college...

For every Randy Moss or Pennington or Bruce there are 100's of guys that put up good numbers at small schools and amounted to crap in the NFL...

F'it lets give the Heisman to Norman Whitley Have you seen his stats?? Amazing simply amazing!!!

Like BJ Symons and every other Texas Tech quarterback, right? My point is this- No player from a middle conference will ever win the Heisman, in all likelihood. However, many of these guys will turn out better in the NFL. Example- Roethlisberger over Manning/Rivers last year. Personally, i would pick Alex Smith to do better in the NFL than Rodgers or Leinart, doesnt matter which school they're at. And there is almost no doubt in my mind, after watching williams, that he will do better than Adrian Peterson or Cedric Benson in the NFL. BTW, i dont think the Heisman can go to a high school player, so this whitley kid is out of luck ;-)
