Fran Resigns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dennis Franchione has stepped down as Texas A&M head football coach, effective immediately.

Franchione made the announcement following the Aggies 38-30 win over 13th-ranked Texas Friday night.

In a brief statement to reporters, Franchione said the win over the Longhorns was a great moment for the seniors, who marked their second win in as many tries against Texas.

Franchione then made the following statement:

"Kim & I have arrived at the decision to step down as head football coach out of respect and love for our players, for this University and its football program.

I've always said that coaches exist for only one reason-the players. We have an outstanding group of young men on this team and especially great people. We want them to know that we love them, feel blessed for our time together, and will miss them.

We appreciate the opportunity we have had at this great institution to work with this administration, the people throughout this department and campus, and the former students. We have made many lasting friendships.

We also need to say a special appreciation to a loyal, tireless and dedicated group of assistant coaches and their families, who have given so much to this program. This includes our support staff and every individual who has been a part of this team.

We have enjoyed 35 years in coaching, and we will consider our time in Aggieland to be a rewarding part. We wish the best to everyone here.

Thanks and Gig' Em!"

Franchione's statement was followed by brief remarks from A&M athletics director Bill Byrne.

"I want to express my respect and gratitude to Coach Franchione for his courage in making this decision, and putting the interests of his players and this institution ahead of his own interests. Coach Franchione is a fine man, and a fine coach, and I consider him a friend. We wish him well and will do anything we can to assist him going forward.

One thing I would like to say at this juncture concerning the private email incident. We now have reviewed all of the information available, and have taken what we think are appropriate actions on behalf of this institution.

With regards to Coach Franchione, we are now convinced that he did not intentionally, knowingly, or directly participate in actions that were inappropriate or in violation of rules or policies. We do believe that Coach Franchione was guilty of inadequate supervision and oversight.

We wish Coach Franchione the very best moving forward, and we are grateful for all of his hard work and effort while he was here at Texas A&M."

Byrne immediately followed his remarks by saying a national search for a new head football coach would commence.

He also said he would not field any questions on that search until a replacement was found.

Franchione finishes with a 32-28 record over the past five seasons, but only a 3-12 record against Big 12 rivals Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech.

The Aggies were 19-21 in the Big 12 during Franchione's five seasons as head coach.

Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Alan Cannon said an agreement between the university and Franchione has been reached, but would not release the details.

Cannon said A&M is expected to be extended a bowl invitation and the Aggies will accept that bowl invitation.

While it was a nice win for the team, I agree with their decision to let him go. He's not someone I would want as my head coach, whether it was directly his fault or not.

I still have little to no clue who will be the new head coach of A&M though. At this point maybe one of the smaller school coaches that have done well this season could be looked at. Somewhat like what Louisville did last year when they got Kragthorpe from Tulsa.

..maybe the head coach of Kansas gets looked at? Or the USF head coach (can't recall either of their names off hand though)?

I really would like the USF coach...can't quite remember his name either or Art Briles from Houston, he and Urban Meyer have kind of the same coaching style that I like; very innovative in offensive plays.

Mark Mangino and Jim Leavitt. I agree they would be great for Texas A&M, especially Mangino, but I doubt either one of them would leave their current situation.
