In Week 1 of the college football season, Michigan's title dreams already have been crushed after a stunning loss to the Division I-AA Appalachian State Mountaineers in Ann Arbor. The game featured a rare Mike Hart fumble, 2 missed 2 point-conversions by the Wolverines and a blocked Michigan field goal in the waning seconds.
I'm in total disbelief about this. What do you guys think of this? How long can Lloyd Carr possibly keep his job after this? It's an embarrassment to Michigan and its massive athletics budget to lose this game.

The only good thing Michigan and their fans can take away from this game is that nobody saw the game. Screw the Big 10 errr Big 11 Network for saving Michigan from a national tv disaster.
Hah, yeah had a chance to monitor this game via ESPN gamecast. I was completely surprised, and somewhat excited to see Michigan get defeated by a team that was suppose to just be a sort of 'warm up'. The only way Michigan can rebound from this is if they go undefeated for the rest of the season, which I seriously doubt.
Even then, I seriously doubt Carr gets away unscathed, especially since Michigan got destroyed in the Rose Bowl last year. That and Michigan fans have never been on the Lloyd Carr band wagon.
Yeah, the whole time when I was looking up App State and how dominant they've been in I-AA is why they haven't moved up to I-A (for someone like Buffalo or Temple) yet.

How many fans do they draw per game, because you need an average of 15,000 per game to maintain D1A status?

Aftere what happened to Marshall I wonder how many teams will jump at the chance to move up. They did well for the first couple of years but they aren't anything near what they were at the 1-AA level.
I don't know much about the money difference, but I guess being a below average-average team in 1-A makes more money than a 1-AA national title contender?

I don't know, I think the rulings on the divisions should be more flexible, something like in European soccer leagues, where the teams that do extremely well on the lower circuit are able to move up, and the teams who perform poorly will be sent down to the minors, so to speak.

I saw yesterday on ESPN that their stadium capacity is a little over 16,000... so they'd have to almost sell out every game.

Well I figure if they've won the championship two years in a row they're probably selling out every game. Even if they're weren't, after beating Michigan, they'll probably be selling out every game now.
I think the Big 10 or Big 12 (can't recall which) is looking to add a new team, so after something like this, I would imagine they'd be fairly interested in the Mountaineers. Would make some huge money if Michigan and Appalachian State got to see each other almost every year in the Big 10. Huge new rivalry...sort of a David vs Goliath game every year.
I think if they were a lower echelon 1A team they would make a lot more money than if they were successful at the 1AA level. My guess is if they made a couple of bowl games they'd have the money to expand their stadium and athletic facilities.

I believe the Big Ten was looking to add a team at one point, they were looking to invite Rutgers, but ultimately decided against it. I don't know any of the leagues are really LOOKING to expand, per se, but they wouldn't necessarily be against it. I could see App State in the Big East or perhaps the MAC (they can't possibly be worse than Buffalo and Temple).

I don't think they'd fit in the Big 12, considering the Big 12 is located in the midwestern region and their farthest east team is Missouri. I don't think they'd want to add an East Coast team.

Yeah, geographically it'd seem that they'd only really fit in the Big East, ACC and Conference USA. I could see them being competitive in C-USA, but I'm not sure they'd be ready for a BCS conference just yet.

If they were to come up to D1A, I doubt they'd go right to a major conference. They'd probably move them to a small conference, and then a dominant small conference team into a bigger conference.
Well, can't a school be in one division for one sport and another for other sports? I know for example my Hoyas are I-AA in football (and terrible even there) but are clearly Division I basketball.

Exactly, you have to remember, although they look good in football, if they move into a big conference, they'll get massacred in everything else.
Not true, you can be D-1A in football or any sport for that matter, and still be 1AA in everything else.

Yes, any university can be D1 in one sport and 1AA, D2, or even D3 in other sports.
Yeah but they're still D1 in football, even though it's D1AA...still counts as D1, which is why they qualify for D1 basketball.
So then the only sport that would change would be football, since they could just stay in D1AA. I just wanted to specify because I didn't know if you were saying the other programs would have to move up to D1AA... which they wouldn't have to, because they already are D1AA.

How long until Lloyd Carr is fired? This week's showing was... Ugly to say the least. At least Appalacian State continued there dominance with a win over some college with 1300 kids.
Well, it's one thing to be completely unprepared for a season opener (like they were against Appalachian State), but for two weeks straight to be completely thrashed, well, the seat is really getting hot for Lloyd Carr. Not only is that bad, but that's two games they've lost AT home - which will obviously piss off a majority of the fans.
I wouldn't be surprised if they fired Lloyd Carr after this game and promoted the defensive coordinator Ron English to head coach. He's a really good defensive coach (granted their defense is playing like crap), but so is the offense. Most importantly he's pretty strict/disciplined, which I think Michigan could really use right about now.
