Wildcats win overtime thriller over Southern Miss for Liberty Bowl trophy
-Memphis, Tennessee · December 29th 2007
Kentucky Wildcats 43,Southern Miss Golden Eagles 36 (Overtime)
Game setup: Southern Miss entered the game defeating Houston for the C-USA championship. The Wildcats of Kentucky came into the game losing 2 in a row, to Georgia and hated Tennessee.
Game story: It was a game of turnovers and mistakes, with bad weather to blame. The snowy and icy conditions led to dropped passes, fumbles, and mistakes all over the field. Wesley Woodyard, Andre` Woodson, Keenan Burton, Rafael Little, and Keenan Burton all played their final games in Kentucky blue, and certainly played like it. Their inspired play kept the Wildcats ahead much of the game, despite the many mistakes and turnovers committed by the 'Cats.
Big play of the game: During their 1st and only overtime possession, Southern Miss was knocked out of field goal position by a very timely Wesley Woodyard sack. This would setup a missed field goal and a Kentucky win.
How the game was won: Kentucky allowed a weaker team to hang in with them all game long, but persevered in the end on the strength of its seniors and leaders. Woodyard provided a pivotal sack to knock Southern Miss out of field goal position in overtime, and on UK's possession, it was Woodson hitting Burton and Tamme all drive long to march the Wildcats to the 3 yard line. The game was then won on a beautiful playaction to Tamme, capping off a very successful and memorable college career for both athletes
Player of the Game: Alfonso Smith, who rushed for 186 yards. Rafael Little played very sparingly, due to injuries. Kentucky Coach David Skrober was sure to give Little the ball a handful of times, as a nod to one of the great backs that Kentucky has seen. Smith, however, stole the show, with gritty running and playmaking that enabled the Wildcats to come away with a bowl win.
Volunteers mach through Lexington; on way to SEC title game
-Lexington, Kentucky · November 24th 2007
Tennessee Volunteers 35, Kentucky Wildcats 28
The Wildcats winless streak continues. Only matched by Navy's losing streak to Notre Dame, Kentucky continues to find ways to lose to their rivals to the south, this time, closing out the 2007 schedule with a disappointing loss to hated Tennessee.
The 1st quarter was all Kentucky fans needed to watch to know what the result of this game would be, as Ronald Hamilton would break not 1, but 2 runs for 50+ yard touchdowns. These 2 runs were followed by a costly UK fumble, that setup the Vol's at the Wildcats 30 yard line, and resulted in a surgical touchdown pass from Ainge, putting the game seemingly out of reach in the 1st quarter.
As the game wore on, Tennessee's defense began taking less chances, playing in softer zone coverage, and allowed the Wildcats to put up a few points, no one, however, even the most die hard Kentucky fans, thought the game was in contention at any time.
Kentucky will lick their wounds and take some time off, making preparations for the bowl week to come. While no official invite has been made, it is almost certain the Wildcats will play for the Liberty Bowl.
finished up the 1st season with a liberty bowl win against southern miss. i talked a few players into staying.. the biggest was myron pryor.. a real hoss on the d line. and so begins the curtis pulley era..
Kentucky Wildcats 14, Louisville Cardinals 7
Game setup: Kentucky comes into the game 2-3 after a tough loss to Florida at the Swamp, while the Cardinals come in injury free and 4-0 on the 08 campaign. Alfonso Smith will play hurt, and most likely see limited action. Trevard Lindley will miss the game, and probably 3 more weeks with a PCL injury.
Game story: One of the lowest scoring games of this rivalries history, both teams simply couldn't finish drives, or even get some of them going. Although not the big play of the game, Harvey's interception in the Kentucky end zone at the start of the 4th quarter kept the game tied and gave Kentucky their chance.
Big play of the game: Louisville was driving and looking for a field goal, with 9 seconds left and on midfield, Johnny Williams picked off an errant pass and ran it back into the end zone on the last play of the game, one of the most memorable plays in this rivalry's history.
How the game was won: Kentucky's defense really stepped up all game, and was the real difference maker. Louisville's defense proved to be too much for the Wildcat offense all game long, making key sacks and stops on 3rd downs, forcing the UK D to be big all game. And they were.
Player of the Game: Johnny William's interception on the last play of the game makes this a no brainer. If this goes into overtime, and UK wins, Kris Harvey and his end zone interception would get the nod. If Louisville wins, running back
Probably my 2nd most exciting game ever playing NCAA 08, i couldn't believe it when i got the pick, as i was running down the field i thought about diving near the 30 to kick a field goal, if i didnt think i could make it to the end zone.. but ya.. that wasn't a problem, i was able to chug it home.
