I would like to be able to do an In-Game defensive focus where you tell your D what to look for before the snap. Here are the options
1)Defend run
2)Defend pass
3)Defend play-action pass
4)QB contain
1) is self explanatory. For (2) you would have to select a receiver (WR,TE, HB or even FB). Then your defense (when in zone) would drift towards that receiver to better defend against him. (3) picking this focus would make your team less susceptible to "biting" on the run fake. Of course, they would not defend the run as well, mainly in zone defense. QB contain would put the D-line/Linebackers in less of a pass rush and instead try to take away running lanes.
I think the Focus would be a good idea because I hate when you kind of know what the offense is going to do, but you can't do much to stop it. Especially play-action. This is also more realistic, because coaches always give the D an idea of what to look for on the next play.
I also think this would be a good idea between games in order to stop a really powerful offensive player or gameplan. Maybe between weeks, you could get plays to practice or drills to run to defend against certain aspects of the offense. I think the between game focus should have these options:
1)Defend Run
2)Defend Short Pass
3)Defend Long Pass
4)Attack QB
5)Contain QB

So wait you know what the person is going to do but you can't stop it so you want the A.I. to do it for you?
I think you should practice alittle more. I mean what are you having trouble stopping. The whole purpose of so many defensive formations and packages, blitzes, etc is to be able to stop your opponent from doing what it is you know he's going to do
Also try using your Safety or someone and make the play yourself. When I know a PA is coming i start taking my safety south waiting for him to make the mistake of actually sticking to the PA. When i know its going to the RB in a flare, then I play the flats, etc.
Let usknow what your having problems with so someone can try to help you rahter than hoping EA will do it for you

I'm not having trouble defending playaction. The whole point of this feature would be to prepare the entire defense for a certain play. When a defense gets on the field, your coach or coordinator gives you a play and he also tells you what to look for. He might tell safety to get deeper in his drop or tell the linebacker to play closer to the line. This feature would incorporate the same concept on the video game. Obviously, you can't tell each player what to do on a video game, but this would be close. And besides, I can't control every single player on defense and controlling one guy doesn't mean that I can stop the play especially since sometimes linebackers and safeties all bite on playaction. So if I control the safety, the linebacker still bites on the fake. And I really hate it when players bite on playaction on 3rd and long. I also think it would be good feature for players like myself who don't always take control of a defender to make a play. Some guys like picking a play and letting the players run it. That's what real NFL coaches and d. coordinators do.
Anyway, I'm not struggling against the CPU or any human opponents, I just think it would be a nice feature.

More paragraphs please. Its very tedious to read when there are no paragraph breaks.

And I sort of see where you are going with this. Cos like when you play your friends they may have one play which happens to be a PA and you know just when they are gonna do it...But your D still bites on it...That type of thing?

Just like the coordinator you speak of you do the same thing. IT'S CALLED CALLING A PLAY BEFORE THE SNAP. so when you but guys in the flats you are basically telling them look for a flare, Screen, etc.
If you pick a Quarter formation or Dime Formation with 3 Deep then your telling them look for the deep ball.
Basically its your playcall ability that's lacking not Madden's defensive capabilities

1) You can tinker with a defensive play. When you call it, and your guys take the field, whichever you're clicked on .. pressing your analogue buttons and such (playmaker Defense) will switch what it is that they do. Meaning, drop a linebacker over the middle into zone .. vs his normal blitz up the middle on a middle blitz play.
2) It's up to you to figure out WHAT you're looking for, and what your Defense should be looking for. Example. You as the coach, the D Coordinator .. think a playaction is coming? Drop your linebackers into zone coverage, that way if they bite, they'll still be backed up and able to defend the route over the middle. Lock your men on your opponents RBs and such. Whether it's playaction or not, they'll be stuck to like glue to avoid either a long run, or a dump off pass of sorts.
3) Pay attention to your players. Their attributes -- they are there for a reason. Rookies and guys with no awareness will bite on playaction no matter what. Whether you know it's coming, they know it's coming, it depends on the playfake, the guy they're playing (how well he conceals the ball, if you notice guys like Manning and Brady when they fake hand off, the icon to indicate who has the ball, stays non-existent LONGER because these players are superior in real life at playfakes .. hence the game's interpretation of their skill by keeping the possession icon invisible for longer) and of course the runningback's ability to conceal it too. Better awareness is the key to linebackers and safeties not biting on the playfakes.
Examples .. I have never seen Ed Reed bite on playaction. Against Dallas, my Falcons playaction was completely useless on Roy Williams. Also, Ed Hartwell on my Falcons squad, a MLB, RARELY bites on playaction while almost all my rookies are sold and burnt every single time. Hartwell's awareness is like 90+ while the rookies are sub 70s.
.. the game leaves the option to figure out what's coming entirely up to you. It's how in depth with the game you are that'll make all the difference. Just like Madden intends. Lotsa depth and options.
Okay, let's change this whole focus thing. I would rather be able to select a defensive focus from week to week in order to prepare your team. Then the CPU would select certain plays to practice in order to prepare for whatever your focus is.

U guys all have good points. But there are things that I think I have not seen in madden and should. I think that we should see guys getting hit in the air. EX: Like when Brian Dawkens hit Crumpler last year in the playoffs in the Eagles and Falcons game. Hits like that. I think that there should be harder hit stickes to. Like the sholder hit could be a clean one. Or like the spear. But we should see more hard hitting if the want madden to been more realestic. Thats one way how.
