Why Vince Young is on the Cover Of Madden 08
So.. with a few people whining like little girls about the cover athlete for this years Madden, I decided to look into things and find out why Vince young was the selection. It's funny that we are a community of Madden players and we know a LOT about this game, but instead of a great discussion about the game we are instead wasting our time moaning about who is on the cover.
You know you can get a template and put whoever you want on the cover (just print it out and slide it in the case) so if it's such a big deal to you, just do that and you won't have to stare at VY all the time (I don't know about you guys but I just don't waste much time looking at the cover player, I'm to busy playing the game).
Anyway.. as I was saying I decided to look into WHY. Every year EA puts a guy on the cover that has something to do with the new improvements in the game. EA has already done the play maker thing with Vick, so why VY? After doing some research I find out that during the draft we are going to be blessed with commercials of Madden 08 with Devin Hester, Vince Young, and Reggie Bush in them.
Then you figure they gave Hester that 100 speed.. why the attention to a Rookie? Rookie game breaker. Rookie that made an impact. Bush had an impact too, so did Vince Young. In fact VY was the ROOKIE OF THE YEAR.
yeah Rookies.. And the Rookie of the year gets the cover. Now I'm willing to bet good money that Madden 08 is going to have a big new feature that has something to do with Rookies, or the draft, or something that somehow relates to rookies.
Having said that.. maybe the cover choice will make a bit more sense to people now, and instead of whining about the choice we could spend some time thinking of the possibilities that the choice for the cover might mean for new additions to the game.

Excellent point. I didn't really think about the point of having him on the cover as I really didn't care to be honest.
It would be cool to have break out stars as rookies. Maybe make thier overall ratings lower than they have been in the past then have a few guys break out into stars.

That makes a lot of sense...sounds pretty cool too, as long as they don't screw it up and have all the rookies just dominate the game. I hope this means they're improving the draft, too, and making it more in-depth and adding more stuff to it...which maybe leads to them adding other improvements to franchise mode. Probably wishful thinking...

I actually heard on ESPN radio earlier that LT was asked to do it, but declined. I guess VY was their next choice.

Not only improving the draft put the game in general .... leaves alot to be desired still ...
With that said your scenario makes alot of sense cash and I do hope they drastically improve the draft and off-season in general ...

i would like to see them implement the option of trades in the draft. like during the off-season, have teams looking to move up or down contact you. like on espn nba 2k6 i think it was. you have a mailbox. other teams would send trade offers and stuff. so maybe make somethin along those lines. teams contacting you to move up or down in the draft. and implement it into the draft itself. have teams contact you just before you go on the clock and actually be able to make trades during the draft. that would be nice.

Thinking about it a bit more, it's more likely that the LT thing was a rumor. I hope this really is about improvements in the draft portion of the game. Maybe making the players that are created more realistic, being able to trade future draft picks, a new Combine. I like this idea very much.

Which console are you playing on?
I know on both the Xbox and PS2 the cpu will offer trades to you during the draft to move up or down.

I've seen CPU offer CPU to move up but I've never personally recieved an offer to move up on the 360. I'm assuming you can get offered though (and I personally moved up to get Troy Smith (which cost me my first and a bunch more because nobody wanted to trade that far down)

Yeah, Kilroy...They already do that..
I hope it does mean its rookie impact, and hence an improved draft, as I find that one of the most fun parts...

Excellent points.
With the Madden drafts, at least the ones that are put out by the game I honestly dont think there are that many sleepers to be found beyond the second round usually. Every now and then you get a decent guy in the 4th or 5th.
It would be cool if Madden somehow implemented a guy that seems to be just mediocre or okay on the draft board, but with pre season blossoms. Maybe have it be a player that comes form a smaller school or something like that. It would have to be someoen like a Colston that just came otu of absolutely nowhere to become a decent success in his rookie year. Would make the draft more interesting instead of just clicking Sim rest of draft after the 4th round.

Completely agree with you there.
Thing is though, I remember in 2K atleast, was you could nab low rated guys who did blossom so I hope Madden does that. Not to meantion you could draft a offensive lineman rated in the low 70's who'd have like 85 pass block and 79 run block which quickly raised in the season.
That would be a great great hook up for Madden. I'd love something along those lines.

Well, in superstar mode... Which is where this might be pointed to... I'm always a sleeper pick...

haha, yeah....I usually go in the 2nd round and am rated high. I've never been drafted by a team I didn't start.
I hate superstar mode though...
