This is what i did for a decent 3-4.
I have madden 08 for playstation 2....I hear the drafts go different for different systems and i don't play online or anything so know nothing about updated draft lists or whatever....
Started with pick 16
Picks,
- DT,Harris
- CB,Hall
- WR,Williams
- LOLB,Merriman
- RG,Andrews
- ROLB,Hawk
- TE,Shocky(could of taken gates but like shocky's BTK)
- WR,Jennings(the next deon branch...mabie)
- RT,R. Tucker(old but good)
- MLB, P. Willis(Wnat to try him ut..long contract, cheep)
- C,Mangold
- LT,J. Thomas 85, Rookie great player underrated!!
- SS,L. Landry...speed & tackle High..fun player on blitz,
- FS,R. Nelson...good hands..Rookie first rounder..speed 93
- CB,Hill, Fast as can be..improves.Sign him long now.
- K,Vinatieri
- P,Moorman(speed89)(try running with him once on fake)
- OLB,P. Posluszny(rookie) fun player...fast..cheep contract.
- WR,R. Meachem(rookie) another deon branch??....
- DE,R smith...strong guy, decent tackeler..poor speed,
- QB,C.Frye..my starter..not amazing yet..camp improves arm strenght I do the rest...I think it's fun having a young guy at QB for the challenge...played a season with the browns, liked him ever since in this game, you can oick him up real late...decent rushing ability as well....I used to take young early on like round 9, but it can be a bore, even if I force him to pass, keeping him planted...I have another list with young as a starter that is good as well with fry as a backup....may post that later...but have seen similar floating around.
- CB,D. Revis(rookie) all he seems to do in a 4/3 is pick off the ball in cover 3...when you have a decent pass rucs this guy is going to get some picks...I had 11 first season in a 4/3 defense..not cheating in picks, no trades....he's slow but when his awareness improves watch out! Great Potential and a late round pick..he either ends up being number 3, behing hall or beats him in Battle...I like this guy....reminds me of Gamble in a way, but is younger and comes later in the draft.
- HB,A. Peterson, Great hands, speed, agi, acc, overall great player..I run alot of screens...I like this guy. long contact low salary...good franchise back.
- HB,J. Norwood...good backup for Peterson..young guy as well with a low contract like perterson..
- MLB,D. Jackson...when his awareness improves he is awesome..good hands, and can run well after a pick...fun player...improves with talent arroud him..can sneak in and get tackles in the gap behing the line often...comes in right away a good tackeler..and look at that contract!! Cheep player for the talent and potential....I had him as a number 2 to Urlacher...after 2 seasons..Urlacher was on the bench in my 4-3 D.....Urlachers stats dropped with age and Jackson Surpassed him...My favorite MLB pick in value.
- DT,Carriker....Awesome....11 sacks second season in a 4-3...had him up to 99 in 3or 4 seasons...can't remember...
His awarness improves..he is fast and strenght is decent...improve it in camp and this guy can be unstopable in a season or 2...long contract and a rookie...his speed helps in drills as well...for getting to the next cone....
- ??,Cant remember....mabie Goldston DT
- ??,
- ??,
- CB,D Holly...Great player....speed good hands...sign him long right now if you want to keep him later....
I traded CB)Hill when he became a star of the future for a number 1 draft pick and to make some room in the salary cap....hill's contract is short and his overall improves qulte a bit when I play him..he was number 3 in my lineup behind hall and revis when i traded him..he still improved there very well....high 90's like 93 when i traded him before his contract expired..last year before it expired....Holly improves even sitting the bench as number 4...good hands....in the dime, he can pick off the ball very well...good speed, good acc....awareness improves...he's a second year guy.my favorite CB pick for this late in the round
Other player I Pick late?
Youll have to figure out when they go.
Vickers, FB
T. Johnson TE...speed and jumping ability...in the redzone with double TE this guy is fun..and he comes so late int he draft.......later on another team i may drop the higehr TE dract pick and sign another OLB instead of OLB #55...who has amazing strength for a rookie..right up there with merriman...but I may sign Wimbley istead..it loas me up at the ROLB Spot....but wibly can play DE...his strength is good..he get's flatened every once and a while, but he does OK......really when you look at it..It's a bit like drafting Taylor who used to play DE, who is now an OLB..Winly has the size speed and strength...but I havn't eperineted with it much.....either way he is a young fast strong OLB that is only Lacking in awareness...his tackle is high...his catch is a little low but he does make picks.....and he really shuts down that corner if A MLB doesn't stealthe tackle from him....when I used him his stats were low because the ball nver got too him...but he still at least improeved and was a 99OVR. by his third season.
He's as good as E. Sims, somewhat...
Shockey QB
Goldston DT, in a 4-3 he's decent number 2...not alot of strength but he improves...I droped him after his contact expred because i could not afford him..he improved too much....and wanted more then I could give.
Vabrini(spelling) good DE...decent backup, people say it doens't matter this late in the rounds...but get rookies or young guys.....they imprve on the bench...they don't have good wareness but if your starters have a high INJ rating who cares...plus they trade better if needed...say you blow it on a draft pick and need a guy at that possition...a s a third adition teams often shift over to give you the guy you need at the same position.
EX
I wanted Ogunleye...
I traded my 1stR, 2ndR pick, and a rookie LE who would normally be an F in a trade....I kept my third round pick..which is a d or d+ often in trades.....I still have that pick...and will probably use it...third round picks can be allot of fun if you look right for players..and it is fun to get a steel in the draft.
I don't think it was too cheep a trade...mabie it was..but whatever...I wanted the guy on my team(laugh)...they had some other good guys a that position anyhow..they had loaded up on DE's so I didn't really worry about it.
SS Little..late round guy...good hands...very good hands....decent in injury situations that i hope i never have...trying him out.
Oh....Hester for KR goes late in the draft...but get him like 35 0r round 36...or youll miss him...abnything above that get OL Rookies like there is a really decent LG or 2 out there at rookie satus....I drafted a rookie at 76, and he backs up my 80 starter....they improve on the bench as well as in the offseason in awareness...have some good O-line coaches and they really do well...when you need to trade that bloated salary OL-man because you simply can not afford them in those tough salary cap spots...one of these long 5 year contract rookies are great to have because by then they will have 2 or 3 years left on contract b yhtat time when your salary cap is getting troublesome.
I like to make few errors in trades..and few trades....I like long contracts, and players that stick arround, become Icons and team leaders...
If you play it right your players that are high in the 90's become team leaders..and the stat increase is enormous when added all around...having 6 team leaders on D will increase the awareness of all players by 6...unless I have something wrong, I'm pretty sure that is how it works.
It is not a fixed stat buyt a in the game stat and seems noticeable to me.
It adds up.....they play as a team....things become very interesting.
I like to win Superbowls...
play your starters well in the superbowl and playoffs and your stats go way up.....if you play poorly your stats can go way down..
Even rookies seem to improve better after you win the superbowl....I think this is to balance the fact that you will have poor picks(unless you cheat) The young guys that you do have seem to get a boost from the playoff and big game experience.
I had Vince Young injured right before th playoffs so had to tackle the superbowl with C. Frye at QB.....Fry's stats went up in a big way durring that time, and he only played those few games....but I had good recievers as well...Ginn Jr. And. Johnson(Rookie)Welker as number 3.....I should really post that list because it was a great list.....one of the best teams i picked for the long bomb passing team..plus I had a hard nose running team for establishing the run and opening up the pass, and an all around tough D....almost too tough....
LB's were Wimbley, Jackson, Urlacher, Merriman.
DL was, Ogundleye, Carriker, Goldston, Holliday.
CB was, Hal, Hill, Revis, Holly
SS was Landry.
FS was Pool.
Later i signed as FA D. Freeney at RE kept holiday for a season then dropped him after his contract ran out....
I also signed K Williams at DT....so the line was unstopable in a 4-3....the backers never saw any action...the D was too tough. All the DB's did were make picks..the rush was so overpowering...and blitz's rarely failed.
All the LB's were 99's
All the The starting CB's were 99..others 93 and above.
The FS and SS were 99
and the DL was all 99...
This was all after year after year 3.
And I was within the salary cap(barely like 450 thousand), no cheating or cheep stuff...but I also had some expensive rookies as well...like a first round late rould RB that was an 86 to start our ovr...fast as hell and broke tackles like mad with good hands....I thought i was going ot have to drop peterson...the guy was a steal...not injury prone.
The next year I drafted another 1st round HB and a 2nd Round OLB...the 2nd round OLB was 99 after the first season and started at 86...dont ask me why he imporved so much...he wnt from an 86 to 99 just in the off season....is it the talent on the rest of the team?? i didn't understand and was shocked.
His awareness wen t up by 24 points...I coundlnt figure out how...but the rest of the team went up the same as well..at least some of the players...they went up by about 22 points in awareness each...but i had just signed some new coaches as well......mabie that could be some of it...yet when in I cant remember if it was the Depth chart screen or roster screen..in the roster scree the overall was lower..in the depth cahrt way higher.....for the nost...yet this OLB had a 99 ovr in both screens.....so he somehow impoved that much simply without the odd bonus that others were getting......none of the stats were in yellow..or anything..whihch I thought was a coaches mod of sorts adding an awarness of 1 or whatever...but 24 points!?! Mabie it was the fact that almost every starter was a team leader by that point...and had recieved that status as of that year. I think that could be it.
This team I hope to escape sallary troubles that i had before..and if o don't like some of the Rookies, I may trade them for draft picks, and sign free agents instead...trouble with that is my ssalary cap will be in trouble, Mabie...who knows...but i can do it mabie...or keep the rookies as backups and hsign the FA's to short term contracts....this team has plenty options and flexibility..that is why i like it as a start..it makes a good base in the draft...It doens't have an amazing QB..but that's they guy who I have the most controll of so it dosn't amtter so much and makes things chalenging and fun...instead of completing every pass your playcalling has to be better....outtalenting the other team can be somwhat fun....but i like it when things are matched up beter so the coaching makes more of difference between games.
So.....
My current team, after training camp.

I'm going on a bit too much.
If you think you'd like a better QB from the top list take him in the first and take carriker as your starter at DT.
If you want a better DL trade your picks for a young stud or take the first pick as a DE.
Peppers is a FA in one year...so if you can wait...
I wanted to try out Harris....for kicks..I may trade him even with the talent, later on for either picks or a player....like Reed at FS, or Sanders at FS, or Thomas at FS.
HB and QB arn't too important to me.
Real good qb's go very early.
It often goes tomlinson as 1
...whatever..it's on your screen every time.
I'd like to try out bush(HB)...but what would i do with perterson??he comes so late in the draft...I cant pass him up....
I suppose i coud trade him...hmm...that just gave me an intersting Idea...
But the idea here is salary cap as well, and penalties...and Bush's contract is very high and short..petersons is 5 years and he has a low contract.....it opens up your chices at FA time, and also you have to take into acount your players increasing sallaries year to year.
The above list leaves
tons of salary cap room.
iF you get too high a pick 1st round from this lest you an not pick up L Landry at strong safety...and I really like the guy....so if you want you can take a higher pick to start out with get palmer or whatever at QB(Palmer goes number 4 round 1) but you miss L. Landry in round 13....you can get Willis(MLB(R)) there though instead of round 10 since he often goes last in the 13th round.then you can fill round 10 with a SS.
Hell even better what might work is ....Willis 13 and laundry at 10..with a high first round pick like a QB.....I might try that..... Carson Palmer instead of a DT Fry still at the bottom as a backup. Willis at 13 instead of 10. SS at 10. instead of mlb....you could also do CB at 3 instead of 2 and still get somebody great and a WR at 2 instead...I'm going to try that out..see if it works.
Mabie
1palmer
2WR
3CB
4OLB
5RG
6OLB
7TE
8WR
9RT9RT
10SS
11C
12LT
13SS
While keeping the rest of the list the same....
thats another option...
Pick up a DE(LE) or DT later in trade before season or in FAgency.
Peppers in season 2 is a good option or you can use your picks.
brady either goes 2 or 3.
Manning in 1 or 2.
If you get the 1 pick you get willisMLB barely...of mabie not at all....but if QB matters that much don't start a draft without a really high first pick.....there still are other OK MLB's that are young...like the guy that sits not too far in overall from jackson..his name maybe thurman..cant remember..he's young and just as talented as Jackson...he improves as well...
OVerall it's a decent team..
The OL is strong..
The DL is strong
The CB's are young and fast some with good hands.
The Safetys are fast and young with low awareness..one can tackle real well the other has great hands....both come alte in the draft.....
The QB is weak in mys fist list but with me that's OK.
The WR's are young and have potential and longish contracts with lower salaries.....leaves room for mistakes and waste in trades later on.
FB hads potential...is fast and strong..I throw allot to the guy, plus run hi often to confuse the D either in I form or split back.
The TEs are dominant....With single back big you can double the TE's and run outs or fly routs on blitz's while pounding the ball.
Screens work well to Peterson.
So there are som dump routs posible here..deep rots to the deep reciever, in routs and quick outs to the shifty young guys with good hands....a decent line with decent runpower for pounding the ball...I like to run a balanced offence..open up the run with a deep ball or 2...then while pounding switch my HB's out to rest them or use Vickers more to pound it...his blocking inmorves with time, and his awerness adn runpower do as well..then a good playactio works well agains t young FS or SS players.
Thomas kills in the running game in conters to the left and sweeps...he has something like 150 pancakes a season..or more...he has speen and gets arround the otside and can take out 2 guys...stincomb does ok in the running game as well..it takes some time for this OL to develop but it does...
all will improve event he old dude Tucker....So that's my O.
DLine is tough
MLB;s are young and slightly inexperienced...that grows with time.....
OLB's are fast and smart with decent hands....meriman is a blitzing machine...and wen on ogunleye's side he has plety orf room to get by.....and the speed to get there to rush a pass for an incomplete or a pick, or get the sack.
FS ans SS worry me....
there are some coming up in FA though....
Landry does well.... and does improve in a few seasons...he is a very raw talent with his awareness so low...
Nelson I played with only one preseason game..
he had a pick in the first quarter...and ran with it well...he looks like a CB out there...he looks like reed minus the awareness, and some catching ability.,,,he's a good rookie with potential...also rookies in trades have a higher value.
FA I may sign if things do not go over well on D and I need some more awareness with talent?
SS,Polimalu(I cant spell that)
FS,Sanders
IT can be boring having a great team as well...but I like to improve players, and win superbowls..it's fun to watch the players improve instead of just being instant gods.....I also Like to hang on to them so they become team leaders...it's good for morale as well..and opens up the possibility of picking up a FA guy that has tallent, becaus the y want to play for you..I suppose this list is more for new guys.who don't want to really cheet...
I leave salary cap on.
Trade deadline on.
I willtrade picks for players, but don't have to with the above list.
I could take Ogunleye instead of Harris in round 1 and still be happy with my D line and running 3-4 instead of a 4-3 because jackson makes a good player in time.
IT is funny because the team has an overall rating of 86 or 87 I believe..it isn't great.....not yet....but has potential to be..not sure what it would do in simulation.
With Frye as a starter probably not great....but who knows.
if your going to sim games....try getting a good QB and this team should do well.
Try geting a good WR sat 2 and the ) will even be better....you can still et a shutdown corner at 3.....
I like this team though, in the first list, so will play it as is.
With a low salary cap it increases the chance that you can keep these guys longer then lose them for cap problem reasons...like players wanting raises, or simple salary increases by the year for each player really adds up fast...and trading some of those gys can really give you a cap penalty...there is a cheet for that....but it takes away from the game....
I like to play with young guys, less awareness, raw talent, long contracts, if they want raises i give them it or trade them...and make sure I fill the slots in some way....any player that improves a great deal who doesn't have much contract left is going to want a raise....like FRY wanted a raise in season 2 of my last franchise because he was 94 OVR at the time..and he had the original contract...so I signed him to a seven year deal..which was a steal for his talent at that time.
Overall it's a very Raw list of picks but fun.
It could be modified as well, but this is my favorite list so far.
This is too long to spellcheck hope it's readable and I'm in a rush.
Happy picking,
Pringles
