Umm.... what system are you playing on? On my original Xbox I get gold every time I do it, but I've heard the system for 40s is tougher on other platforms.

Well, I'm not 100% what version you're using, but for the sake of probability, I'll assume you have it for the 360.
Best way to do this is to first lean down before the start of the drill, by pressing down on one of the analog sticks. Then, when it starts, just continually keep tapping the sticks down, make sure to press them down in a sort of.. 'left stick, right stick, left stick, right stick' fashion. While doing it faster helps, I suggest starting off slow because it's better if you take it easy so your player doesn't stumble. Remember when pressing down on the sticks, you're alternating, so don't press them both down at the same time.
When you get close to the finish line hold down the right trigger to lean forward. I'm pretty decent at the 40 yard dash, I usually get (depending on the player) 4.50 or so.
Also it should be noted, if the player you're doing it has slow speed to begin with..like..say..Peyton Manning, you should do it (if you're doing this for Training during the season) on the easier mode and work your way up because the slower a players speed attribute, the slow he runs to dash.
..and to answer your question TR, the 40 yard dash can be used for a few other things, such as trying to rehab a player faster. The main thing it's used for is every week during the season you can train your players, and to increase their 'speed' weapon or 'quick receiver' weapon skill you have to run the 40 yard dash.
It is also a mini-game option outside of the game (on 360). If you don't want to waste attempts during your franchise trying out Forenci's technique I suggest practicing it in there.

I've tried them, I'm not sure they helped my play though lol. I knew how to do the various running back moves, and I can complete passes in the drills, but that doesn't transfer over to my ability to run and pass effectively in an actual game. I thought the pre-play drill was very helpful, because I never used to do much more than playmaker controls, basic audibles and motion before the play.

Haha I don't think I got beat on a single section on any of the difficulties on rushing because I'm cool like that haha jk...but believe it or not the passing on easy gave me the most trouble...I don't even see what the preplay one is for....I can't beat the last offensive section on that.

I ran a 4.23 with Hester. I put both index fingers on the top of the left and right analog and my right middle finger on the right trigger for the lean. Just focus on the left then right then left motion first then work on building speed. I use the foward lean at about the 35 yard marker. Staying "in the zone" for the longest possible amount of time is the key. Word
Ya I sucked at the 40 yard dash also. First time I ran it got a 5.16 and people cheered for me. Dont knpow who the player was just some guy off the Cowboys who the computewr picked for me but ya the 40 yard dash is so GAY
Best I've ever done is 4.00 with Manny Lawson in franchise mode. His speed was a 98. I've done 4.07 with Braylon Edwards in franchise mode--speed 99 quickness 99.
