Detroit Lions Pre-Season Game (2) Press Conference
The owner of the Detroit Lions steps up to the podium with a rather big smile on his face.
"First, off..all I have to say is..wow. I was on the edge of my seat the entire game. Our offense did well, our defense did very good at times, and I felt the special teams helped keep us in good field position during the entire game.
As you know, Gibran started the game for us and we felt like he did well despite his limited amount of passes in this game.
Even more so, we were VERY happy with how Dan Orlovsky performed in the second half. It's gone a long way to decide who will be the back up to Jon. Next week we'll be putting Dan in the first quarter to see how he fairs against the first team defense.
I felt like all of our receivers had a great game. In his first real appearance Cedrick Wilson was very reliable. Corey Bradford remains a very good option when it comes to stretching the field vertically. Vincent Jackson saw some VERY limited play time (about 5-8 snaps worth from our count), and he did very well in these few plays as we expected.
Our defense struggled against the run, but we feel like when we have Will Smith, Shaun Rogers and various other starters in that won't be as big an issue during the regular season.
Jason Craft looked good in coverage, coming away with an interception for a TD. Which was great.
Jason Hanson was spot on most of the night except for one kick at the end of the game.
Obviously the biggest thing of note was the play of Brian Calhoun. We felt like in the limited carries he had that he did superb. When Shawn Bryson was injured on the second to last play of the game, Brian came and scored an amazing game winning TD for us. If I counted correctly he broke four tackles, two of them stiff arms, on the way to the end zone. An amazing performance from Brian. We hope to use him during the season to keep Kevin fresh.
Overall, I'm very happy with the results, considering we didn't have many of our starters in.
Are you at all concerned that you are 9/31 on third downs. With none in the last game. Only six times has the team been in the redzone. Is this cause for worry, or do you feel it will sort itself out nicely during the regular season?

Extremists are like slinkys... Ultimately useless in the grand scheme of things... But still brings a smile to the face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

"Well, if we had most of our starters in, then I would begin to give it some serious concern, but with out a lot of our starters in I feel it's not as big an issue. Certainly it could raise some concerns if it were to continue in the regular season, but for now I'm not worried about it."

"I think we've proven if nothing else in the pre-season we have a lot of guys who can step up for us in prove themselves at WR. Corey Bradford comes to mind immediately. He has done some great things during the pre-season with less than stellar QB play for a majority of it. Cedrick Wilson and Mike Furrey have been solid in the same situation.
We feel like Vincent adds another dimension, but if he doesn't progress like we think he will, then we still have a lot of receivers who can step up in his stead."
