Detroit Lions Pre-Season Game (2) Press Conference
Once again, with a disappointed look on his face, the owner of the Detroit Lions Alex Anthony steps up to the podium. After taking a glance at the press assembled he starts speaking in a clearly upset tone of voice.
"First off, despite our two poor performances in the pre-season, we remain firm on not starting many of our key players during the pre-season. We feel the risk is ultimately not worth the reward.
We hope this doesn't come as a disrespect to any team who is starting a majority of their first string players, it's just we feel in order to protect this team it's best we keep our key players off the field.
That said, we don't wish to use this as an excuse for continuing poor play in the pre-season. We know we'll play better in the regular season, but it remains a concern that some key depth players are not preforming well.
We give a lot of credits to the Browns on how they played too. Overall they did a much better job, made less mistakes, and clearly out performed our players on the field.
That having been said, the coaching staff has decided to start Gibran Hamden next week as opposed to Dan Orlovsky for the first half to see how he does in that situation. We're clearly very unhappy with how Dan played this game. Right now we're very uncomfortable with him backing up Jon Kitna, and it's one of the reasons we're keeping Jon out of the pre-season.
We didn't get a great chance to evaluate the run game because we were down pretty much the entire game.
One thing we were fairly happy was with the play of Jeremy Bloom at WR, despite the drops. We feel like he creates some good mismatches and hope to use his talent at WR to give us some needed speed at the position.
We know we'll play better in the regular season, and we're not overly worried about the appearance of these losses making us look bad, so we don't plan to be pressured into risking our starters for the sake of making the score look more balanced.
Well, that's all - any questions?
