Jets Preseason Week 3 PC

Coach Mangini: I don't have much to say today...there really isn't much to be said. Just questions...questions we better have resolved before the regular season starts. Such as, where the hell is the defense? For the second time in a row, we allowed over 400 yards - a whopping 461 to the Giants. Our D has gotten worse each week, from a dominant performance holding Tampa Bay to 7 points, to the Redskins 30+ points, 400+ yard performance last week, and now 450+ yards to the Giants.

And it's our starting defense, too, that's doing the damage. The Giants scored 20 points in the first half. Eli Manning threw for 164 yards in his one half of play, and Brandon Jacobs rushed for 150+ yards and 2 TDs, almost exclusively in the first half against our first team defense. We have to stop allowing big plays - most notably a 78 yard rushing TD by Brandon Jacobs, a 63 yard bomb from Eli Manning to Tim Carter, and a 40 yard pass to Jeremy Shockey.

But even with the defense taking the day off, we still managed to come within a field goal of victory. Not because of the running game, because they took the day off too - Chris Brown wasn't finding the holes, and there weren't many to begin with...he ended with just 2 YPC. The only thing that kept us in the game was the passing game. Patrick Ramsey was brilliant, completing all but 3 of his 18 passes, throwing a late 4th quarter TD, and not throwing any interceptions. We have no doubt he will be a very solid backup. Isaac Bruce led the receivers again and improved on last week's debut, catching 7 passes for 100+ yards. Leon Washington caught the lone TD pass, a 20 yarder.

Point is, there's 5 aspects of the game we have to perfect before Week 1 - passing offense, rushing offense, passing defense, rushing defense, and special teams. I'd say we're about 2/5 of the way there, with only one week left in the preseason. If we don't get the defense and the running game fixed soon, there's not much hope for us this season.

Questions?

What do you think is the cause of the offensive woes in the running game?

What changes in the D can you make or who can you move in and out to help them?

It's a problem all around...the line isn't creating many holes, and when they do, Brown is having trouble finding them. Leon Washington has had a little more success, but you also have to remember he's been going up against backup defenses.

I'm hoping they find their rhythm before the regular season...otherwise this is going to be a very one dimensional team.

Well we've been playing a mixture of starters and backups against mostly starting offenses...we're hoping once we get all of our top personell in there, we'll be better off.

One thing we're seriously considering is starting Victor Hobson. It wasn't in our plans before, but he's played great this preseason...he leads the team in tackles and also has a sack. We might have to shuffle the linebackers around a little bit to get him in.

Thanks for the questions...anyone else?
