I just wanted to take a moment..to ask the current and/or aspiring defensive coordinators what do you believe to be the best defense...or do you build the defense around the level of talent currently on the team?
I personally believe it depends on the players you have. This past year I played in a 3-3-5 and we were one of the best defensive teams around. Personally as an Offensive lineman I hate to play against a 4-3 because it's tough to get good angles on guys and as a blocker your constantly fighting not to fall a step behind against it. But those 2 are my favorites.
Which ever you choos madden or real life...let's get your answers for each....
Personally I love the Cover 2 in madden...I believe the Cover 2 fits best with no matter which personell your team may have...because it can be "molded" accordingly to best benefit the team..
More of a 3-4 guy in Madden because I love the blitz packages. Love to use the 3-4 itself along with nickel packages.
Real life well I did play a few games as a CB and FS when not playing WR and I liked the Cover 2 alittle better so I can roam around but we had such athletic players we never stayed true to a defense. It all depended on our opponent. We had games where we ran the 3-4 most of the game and vs Union HighSchool we used more Cover 2.

damn 3-4 in high school? that's unheard of where I live. When I played back in high school (class of 04') we ran a 5-3 and 4-4. Lot of running where i live.

Where do you live? Why is that so unheard of? Might just be us out here. THink we only used that vs Union High School, played em twice.

Well fo rme it depends on the strengths of my defense...Let's say I have a strong D-Line and a strong secondary then I will run a 4-3, but if Linebackers are myu strength or I have several fast linebackers I prefer a 3-4. Cover 2 is also an option but i prefer a base 4-3 or 3-4.
OK, as far as madden I am a 4-3 and Nickle personally.
Real life playing in a small high school we ran a 6-2 and 5-3, I then went onto college where we played 4-3, nickle and even a dime package. I played MLB at both levels. I now coach my old high school team as a linebacker coach. It really depends on what level your school is at and what you go against each week passing teams or running teams.
I'm no Defensive Coordinator, but am currently enrolling in classes and hoping to become one. Even if it's on the Highschool level. Right now, I have settled for a little league team of 8th graders. Now to the subject at hand...
In Highschool, my division ran 80% of the time and the 4-4 defense was really the only way to go. That's at my highschool. and it varys. If I were to choose which defense to play in the college ranks and/or the NFL I would have to choose the cover 2.
I'm not biased, though I do live in Tampa and Tony Dungy created the Cover 2 pretty much, but it's certainly the best way to defend almost anything. You have to utilize it the right way though.
You need a beefed up defensive line for the most part, that'll help stop the run while keep enough pressue on the Quarterback that he doesnt have all day. Then you'd need quick enough linebackers to read and react to play fakes and ordinary runs.
The most important part is your defensive backs. Obviously, your safetys almost certainly must run faster than your cornerbacks. If I were to suggest it, move your safetys to CB and your Cornerbacks back to Safety.
The cover 2 creates mismatches for route running, it inables the quarterback to read the patterns, and it's like you've got yourself a 9 man line. Can it be beaten, yes. However, if you use it the right way....
This past year in High School we ran a 3-3-5 stack and it worked beautifully. Which really shocked me considering I played in a division where teams make a living running the 4-4 and 5-2 slant on the defensive side and live and die by the I and wishbone on offense.
It was versatile enough that we could walk 9 guys into the box or we could rush three and drop 8 into coverage, which we did against the one team that ran the run and gun offense. I think it worked, in switching from the 4-4 to the 3-3 stack we went from 1-9 and last place to 7-3 and conference champs. It just hasn't caught on at the D1 level yet which is why you don't see it in a lot of places.
A lot depends on the level of play. High School compared to College compared to Pro makes for huge differences because of the amount of passing.
I generally like a 3-4 though because it can create a lot of chaos on the offensive line. You have so many different guys that can potentially blitz or drop back that the offense can use an incorrect blocking scheme and miss a LB that blitzs.
I love my 3-4 we run at school. We played our 1st game and the opposing coach yelled at his offense that it was a 4-3, then the next drive that they should run all over a 3-4, then he starts yelling that they should be used to a 5-2 by now. Pretty funny, he was a horrible coach along with the rest of their staff though. They didn't relize the entire game our center couldn't pick up on blitzes. Like I was saying I love the 3-4.

If you have Brian Urlacher he is a totally destructive force in the 3-4. I like to pair him up with Keith Brooking in the middle. They make a great combo with Michael Boley and DeMorrio Williams coming off the ends.
