Eagles Cut Formerly Signed Tight End
Philadelphia, Pennsylvnia -- Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid has announced today that the team has cut former Eagles backup tight end Ernie Conwell.
Conwell, who was signed to a one year deal right before the preseason kicked off, made two catches for 19 yards in the three preseason games. Against Pittsburgh this past weekend, Conwell sustained a broken wrist that team doctors announced yesterday would sideline him for the remainder of the season.
"We like what Ernie brought to the table. He was a great blocking tight end, something we like to have in our second tight end", said head coach Andy Reid. "Maybe next year we will decide to bring him back again, he was great while he was here".
When asked as to who the Eagles might try to replace Conwell with, Reid responded: "Matt Schobel will now be the definate number two tight end. Schobel is a very good receiving tight end, and gives us a number of options running two tight ends out there. We will attempt to sign another tight end, and are currently eying a few different candidates".
It is rumored that the Eagles are eyeing Nate Jackson, a speedy tight end whose blocking is questionable, Tony Curtis, or the top tight end on the market, Jeb Putzier.
The Eagles will eat $450,000, which was the signing bonus that they agreed to with Conwell on his contract.
