Interesting. I'm still forming an opinion on this, but initially I'm thinking the judge doesn't have any right to judge one way or the other.
Quote:
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -- A federal judge Tuesday temporarily barred Hazleton, Pennsylvania, from implementing a law designed to prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town.
Judge James Munley of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania issued a temporary restraining order against Hazleton City Council, preventing it from enforcing its Illegal Immigration Relief Act Ordinance.
The measure has become a model for other U.S. towns that blame illegal immigrants for a range of social problems.
The law, which had been scheduled to take effect Wednesday, would fine landlords found to be renting space to illegal aliens, close down businesses that hire them, and allow legal employees to sue the businesses for employment lost during such a shutdown. A related law also establishes English as the town's official language.
The restraining order is valid until November 14.
In a 13-page opinion, Munley said immigrants risked "irreparable injury" by being evicted from their apartments if the law is enforced. He also said he was not convinced by the city council's argument that illegal immigration increases crime and overburdens social services.
"Defendant offers only vague generalizations about the crime allegedly caused by illegal immigrants but has nothing concrete to back up these claims," Munley wrote.
He added that since the plaintiffs -- representing the town's Hispanic community -- claim the law affects constitutionally protected rights, it is in the public interest to delay enforcement of the ordinance until a court can consider its constitutional implications.
About a third of Hazleton's 31,000 residents are immigrants from Central America. According to local civil rights activists, about a quarter of the town's immigrant population is in the United States illegally.
The law, passed by the city council in July and revised in September, is seen as a template for similar laws passed by 10 other towns around the country, according to the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, one of the groups that has joined in a lawsuit challenging the measure.
Thirty-two towns are considering similar measures.

I think some of this is stupid. Although I do understand some of the arguements made not only in this article but against immigration, primarily illegal immigrants, in general. I don't feel illegal immigrants really steal that many jobs. I mean some of the work they do is undesirable to most. Things like landscaping, being bus boys at restaurants, etc. is not a sought after job by most Americans. Do they steal some jobs ... YES .... seen it happen, happened to my father since their labor is cheaper than his .....
Its a subject that can go either way for me ...

I think some of it is stupid also, both in what you are saying... And other reasons I'm sure.

Should it matter how many if that is indeed a valid stand?

I agree... Some jobs, I'd even go so far as to say most jobs, that immigrants are 'stealing' aren't desirable to the average American. Oh... I just don't think most that think this 'stealing' is happening realize is that yeah... Those jobs WILL be filled... But given the very nature of our society, Capitalism, a higher demand for a good or service will naturally... *gasp* Pay more. Illegals help keep it cheap.

<shrugs> If illegals are happy being serfs... I say let them. But it's by choice, and I'm not paying for them. NO GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS.

I agree they do a lot of jobs that are deemed undesirable. I think part of the reason they are also considered undesirable is because certain employers want people to go out there and work their butts off for 5 bucks an hour. Most Americans wont work in fields for that.

yea there not taking many jobs from us now but in the long run i personally think their will be much less job opprutunties for us citizens than for illegal immigrants
I think this whole thing is silly... so much fuss over something that could be so easily solved.
If someone want's to live in this country, there is a process to do so. If someone tries to live in this country without going through the process, they are here illegally.
They don't pay taxes. They take lower wages, putting legal workers at a disadvantage. They should be put on a bus and shipped to where ever they came from. (I'm starting to sound like my Dad)
One of the some of the biggest reasons I feel strongly about this issue in America, is because of figures like these from most recent release from the US Census:
Poverty
Overview
There were 37 million people in poverty (12.6 percent) in 2005. Both the number and rate were statistically unchanged from 2004 and marked the end of four consecutive years of increases in the poverty rate (2001-2004).
There were 7.7 million families in poverty in 2005, statistically unchanged from 2004. The poverty rate for families declined from 10.2 percent in 2004 to 9.9 percent in 2005. The poverty rate and the number living in poverty both declined for married-couple families (5.1 percent and 2.9 million in 2005, down from 5.5 percent and 3.2 million in 2004). However, the poverty rate and number in poverty showed no statistical change between 2004 and 2005 for female-householder-with-no-husband-present families (28.7 percent and 4.0 million) and for male-householder-with-no-wife-present families (13.0 percent and 669,000).
As defined by the Office of Management and Budget and updated for inflation using the Consumer Price Index, the average poverty threshold for a family of four in 2005 was $19,971; for a family of three, $15,577; for a family of two, $12,755; and for unrelated individuals, $9,973.

Compare those numbers to the estimate that there are 22 million undocumented illegal workers in the US.
IMHO, Illegal immigrants add to this problem because they have little choice but to take what they can get from employers. If you replaced every illegal immigrant with a honest working citizen making the minimum wage (which is still a joke,) a dent would be made in the poverty percentage and the economy would upswing because more people would have money to put back into circulation.
As for the right of the Federal Judge to issue that order... I'm not sure what the actual legal standing is, but from what I understand, the federal courts can overturn local ordinance. There always has to be a higher link in the chain, otherwise locals can make up any rules as they please. Of coarse, the council can appeal to a higher court and so on. As a society though, i think we are way to litigious.
If they come over en mass without ID...Where the hell do you send them?

Thanks man... I was hoping someone would laugh at that.
There isn't a very good answer to the problem. I'd like to be sympathetic to those who come to this country to try to find a better life, but if they are doing it illigally and at the cost of this country.
It's not that I hate foreigners or something like that. In fact, generally speaking... I love them! The way I see it, we are all earthlings, but some of us refuse to act properly. I'm just targeting illegal immigrants with my comments.
As for if they came over en mass.... then I would use a barge.
