Ricky Hatton wants a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr., considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. It looks like he might get his wish.
Mayweather said Tuesday he will come out of retirement to put Hatton in his place.
"I was retired but I'll sign to fight Hatton right now. I've tried to let the things he said about me slide by, but now he's 'dissing' me on national TV and I want to shut him up. I've never wanted to hurt an opponent like I do Hatton.
"Ricky Hatton cannot fight. He throws one punch at a time and then holds. Hatton is the most overrated fighter of the last 25 years."
Hatton's one-punch knockout win Saturday night over Jose Luis Castillo to retain his world junior welterweight championship just might have been the breakthrough the British fighter needed to convince fans outside his native country that he is the real thing at 140 pounds.
Like Mayweather, Hatton is undefeated. Unlike Mayweather, he fights in a wild, all-out style that should prove popular as he continues his campaign in the United States.
"There was more action in the four rounds of this fight than Floyd showed in his entire career," Hatton said.
Mayweather announced his retirement after beating Oscar De La Hoya last month.
Hatton's father, Ray, said that his son is ready to face Mayweather -- anywhere.
"We're up for the fight, you've got to be up for a fight like that," Ray Hatton told Radio Five Live in the United Kingdom. "But it doesn't always end with the two fighters. There tends to be a few people getting in between.
"Ricky is chomping at the bit. I've spoken to him a little bit before all this came out and he said it's a no-brainer. It's a definite yes.
"Ricky will fight him anywhere -- that's the difference between him and Floyd, who wants it on home turf."
Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's manager, said a fight could happen in the fall.
"Hatton's trying to promote himself off Floyd's name and he [Mayweather] will kick his butt. Floyd told me he wants to get the deal on," Ellerbe said, according to the Guardian newspaper. "Hatton [insulted] Floyd [on television]. But that's OK, he's had his opportunity to talk. Now all he has to do is to sign a contract and we can get this done. We can have it this year, in the fall. We don't need to wait."
I think this would be one hell of a fight if it does actually happen. Mayweather may have wished hed have stayed retired cause I believe Hatton is the real deal.
I didnt know he was rated high enough to be overrated?
Anyway, the sheer fact that he has made it big enough for guys in the US like you Jabroni to be actually paying attention to him, that is so awesome. He literally lives 2 minutes down the road and is the most down to earth guy ever...He is a local hero, to think he might be fighting Mayweather boggles the mind.

It all started one crazy weekend when our girlfriend said, "trust me, rub this on it and it won't taste so bitter." We woke up 14 hours later in a South American jungle wearing a stewardess uniform and some ceremonial wedding beads.
I was listening to ESPN radio on the way home and both of the guys there said mayweather could show up to this fight overweight and outta shape and beat hatton hands down destroying him.
I think they really need to pull their heads out and realize there are some decent boxers elsewhere. Boxing needs a really good guy to come in and shake things up.
Hatton hasnt done enough to merit the fight...Agreed. Hatton just wants it. Hatton wants to the best pound for pound guy in the world...Most say that belongs to Mayweather...
Mayweather and he have thrown insults back and forth for a while, I think as much as anything, Mayweather wants the fight cos he feels "dissed".
Hatton is not overrated, get a grip.
When people are saying, as Jabroni's friends did that Floyd could turn up overweight and out of shape, or as you said with one hand, and beat him, he is severely UNDERRATED if anything.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen sooner than expected, as Floyd seems to actually want to fight him, and I'm certain it'll make some pretty good money too.
Would be a fun fight to see. I sure Mayweather would win, but I doubt he would completely destroy Hatton like some people are saying. Hopefully this fight gets together sooner, rather than later.
Meanwhile, Hatton should definitly take on some more well established fighters first, to prove the point he should be in the ring with Floyd.
Well I don't seem to be the only one who thinks he's overrated .... so .... I don't know what to tell you ...
We all have our own opinions ... Just because I say he's overrated doesn't mean I need to get a grip ... Just means I think he's overrated ... You feel otherwise and I dont' expect you to say any different because he is your countryman and you will always defend him ....

If people think Floyd would DESTROY him, he is underrated.
If people think he would beat Floyd, he is probably overrated.
He is not rated highly enough, for the fiftieth time, to be overrated...Because he has an undefeated record does that mean he is "rated"? I think you might be assuming it does...Cos I dont know where on earth you are hearing people talking him up.

He would lose to Mayweather, the best pound for pound guy in the world. He is not just good, he is great.
He would not lose to "good" boxers, because he himself is good. He has already beaten "good" boxers...
I think he could beat Cotto, tho it would be a tough fight...
I dont think Rick is saying I am overrating him, I think he is saying he is overrated fullstop, and I dont see how the hell that can be..
And I definately do not overrate Hatton, there are flaws in his game, he relies a lot on bullying tactics, he lets himself get tied up a bit too much, he has the habit of banging his gloves together just after the fighters have been broken up and can get caught as such (he hasnt, but can), he sometimes does not string combinations or punches together for whatever reason. He probably doesnt make guys miss enough. His emotions can wear him down (tho they also spur him on a lot)...
I dont think he is the best fighter in the world. But I think he deserves A LOT more respect than Rick is giving him, and I really hope he gets a big name fighter soon. Though he beat Costa Tzu and he was a big guy at the time, and he didnt just beat him, he layed the proverbial smackdown...He just beat Castillo who is a big name and he gets told "Oh, no he was washed up" or by Rick "He gave up completely independent of the fact Hatton was beating him and hit him with a PERFECT body shot"...
I hope he gets someone where there arent these excuses about why he did so. All he can do is fight the people he is given. He has done that and has yet to lose..

So until he fights Mayweather and we see if he gets destroyed or just loses we don't know how good he is?
Like I said I really don't know because I don't watch boxing and when I do I don't watch guys I could beat in a fight.. I watch the guys that would beat me silly... these little guys that I could pick up and throw don't do it for me..
But I've pretty much lost all interest in boxing and like I said I have absolutely no idea what I am talking about and don't pretend to. I just for some reason felt I needed to join in a discussion that I know nothing about.. lol

No no, a fight against someone like Cotto who is very good, would really let us know.
The fight against Castillo did for me and others, but people are saying he was washed up, so it didnt do it fully. If he goes ahead and beats Cotto, that would really show something.
Beating Mayweather doesnt even bare thinking about its that good.

Lets himself get tied up too much ??? How about he clinches too much ... check out his last two or 3 fights .... EXCESSIVE CLINCHING .... I hope you don't dispute this so I dont' have to bring videos into this ...

Why do I need to give him respect. Just be worried about him getting respect from your fellow countrymen and the boxing historians ... The rest of it is trivial ....

That was an impressive fight and then he came back to fight like trash in his next fight ....

Well if people are saying he's washed up ... and if you have the announcers like Emanuel Steward and Jim Lampley, who know TONS about boxing, saying that this doesn't look like Castillo .... I guess somethign gives

He can only fight who's put in front of him ... Exactly ... and he's yet to fight someone worthwhile in many peoples opinion ... Hence why alot of people don't feel as strongly about him ....
Just like people critic Floyd alot because of the people he's faught ....

Yeah, I do have confidence in him. I can acknowledge his weaknesses, but I think he is a very good fighter, and Id back him to beat Cotto right now (tho I would have to look at the circumstances of the fight, any injuries etc)

His chin is too suspect to be great if you ask me...
He is in the border of good and great...Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about your chin...

Chin .... How many times did you see him get knocked out ????
And now tell me how many times he looked like he could get knocked out or was about too (wasn't alot) and came back to beat that fighter and knock him out ??? (Every Time)

Coming back to beat fighters, thats his skill. He has good skill. How many times have I seen him wobbled? A few, against suspect punchers...
Nope, not been KOed, but being wobbled against suspect punchers is enough in my mind to qualify a questionable chin.

If thats more important than any skill then why the hell do you think Hatton is overrated?
And why the hell do we not see people like Anthony Bonsante as world champions? That guy has heart...But he has limited skill...
All skill equal, heart provides the decider, but it doesnt override poor chins for example, unfortunately.
Anyway, I hope to see a Cotto Hatton fight as I think it will be far more entertaining than Hatton Mayweather, and its a bigger fight for Hatton than Malignaggi...Tho Sugar Shane would be a good one too, I think he said he would fight him in England, which would be sick...And Mayweather is refusing to do so.

Why would Mayweather ever fight him in England ... ???
Mayweather is the champ .... Taking a fight form an inferior fighter who doeesn't bring money to the table ... when compared to other boxers ... So why fight in England ??? Makes no sense ...
Cotto doesn't have that weak of a chin ... I think he's faught some more skilled boxers ....
Anyway .... When taht fight happens we'll see .... Get some more money ready ...

Where did I say he should? Lol. I WANT him to. Im not saying he should. Hence why I would the Sugar Shane fight because he is a guy who has said he will do so, and hence, I can go and see it...
