Citing the April 16 campus shootings at Virginia Tech that left 32 people and their killer dead, basketball recruit Augustus Gilchrist said he is "not mentally prepared" to honor his letter of intent and will not play for the Hokies next season.
I wanted to post about this because I heard talk of it on the radio and they were bashing him for his decision saying he gave a commitment and should honor it.
I totally disagree with that and feel that he has to make the best decision for himself. If he didn't feel like that is the best situation he needs to move on and find one that does fit him.

I'm sure there's a different atmosphere on VT's campus. He doesn't want to be forced to cope with the mourning and grieving that will undoubtedly continue in to next year. I'm sure we will have the same problem.
I don't blame him for wanting to back out. He made a commitment before the tragedy occured. When something changes as drastically as this, he should have the right to change his mind as well.

exactly what i was thinking he doesn't know what it was like to be there and he would be forced to honor them and he doesn't want to let them down i think was his thoughts behind the decision
I agree that he shouldn't be forced to honor it...but I think it's silly to back out of it because of what happened. The shooting could have happened anywhere at any college...it's not like if he goes somewhere else he's completely safe from all threats. It's really unfortunate that it's tarnished VT's reputation so much...just a case of bad luck, I guess.
