Jumping, using weights while jumping. go to the gym, they'll help you

When I was a teenager I had right around a 34 inch vertical. I did it by... Jumping.
It helps that our ceilings in the house I was living in were 9 feet... I'd jump till I could touch it... Over and over... Couple of times a day... Then I got to where I could palm the ceiling... <shrugs>
I doubt I have a 20 inch now.

Extremists are like slinkys... Ultimately useless in the grand scheme of things... But still brings a smile to the face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
Once or twice a week depending on how well you recover..
Step ups with dumbells
lunges with dumbells
Squat till you puke...
Then do plyometrics every day that you don't work your legs with the above exercises... Get something you can barely jump up on to and jump up on it and back off as many times as you can. Then rest and repeat.
Get something you can barely jump over side to side and jump backand forth over it until you can't make it anymore.. rest and repeat.
As you get to where you can jump higher increase the height of the objects.
Don't use something you will kill yourself with when you miss...

I can get the rim but no dunk... like cash said squatting helps... leg lifts help somewhat too... and just jump a lot... wenever you're near a hoop and have a chance just jump and see how close you get... when you notice you've improved it will motivate you to keep going until you can dunk...
<laughs> I was happy touching the Rim at 5'9" back when I actually could jump. And it's not like I hit it very often. Just the hooks hanging down.

A lot of it is technique too. If you can jump straight up and touch the rim from a standstill then you should be able to dunk with a running start (at least dunk a ball that you can palm).
When we were in high school Tigam could jump straight up and touch the RIM. I couldn't jump straight up and touch the RIM, yet if I got a running start I could dunk a ball that I could palm.
A few months before I joined the Marine corps I would play ball with guys in the city we moved to. I played ball almost every day and got to a point that I could dunk. Nothing spectacular just a dunk.
Also, if you canlose any fat that would help. Another suggestion is riding a bike.. especially if its something you don't do a lot.
