High School Wrestling - Girl wins state

A girl from Alaska won her state title.. I think its pretty impressive.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Michaela Hutchison became the first girl in the nation to win a state high school wrestling title while competing against boys.

Hutchison won the final of the 103-pound weight class during Alaska's big school wrestling championships. The Skyview High sophomore entered the state tournament ranked No. 1 in her weight class.

Amid chants of "C'mon, Michaela" and "Girl power," Hutchison earned a 1-0 victory Saturday over Colony High School's Aaron Boss.

She scored an escape with 16 seconds left to beat Boss for the second time in two weeks. Family and friends mobbed Hutchison as she walked away from the mat with a bloody nose, while the crowd rose in a standing ovation.

"They were helping me," Hutchison told the Anchorage Daily News.

She finished the season with a 45-4 record that included 33 pins, one shy of the state single-season record. Hutchison is the third in her family of 10 children to win a state title, joining brothers Zeb and Eli.

*claps* Mad props to her, That is an impressive feat for any one, 45-4 with 33 pins, much less as a sophmore. Wonder how she'd do at the national level?

Hmmm id say not so good, Alaska isnt the best wrestling state for sure... i mean nothing close to anything good, see one thing i havnt really brought up to you guys... is that im a wrestler in high school, see not only do i play in a band (thats falling apart btw) but i also wrestle in high school.

I wrestle in the weight class 112, tho i cut about 15 pounds to get there so i weigh about 130 most of the time and cut down thro the week, a girl wrestler is nothing rare really, i mean a state champ is great and all but really at 103 lbs the weight class is really weak and a girl would be perfect for it, girls are no diff then guys when it comes to learning moves and profecting technique and thats all it takes to be a good wrestler, the strength would be the only problem for her but if she has the technique down then strength is really taken out cuz technique > strength.

Thats how it goes, and the 33 pins, i generally have about 35-40 pins in a season this yr at 112, and 103 is a weight class where your either pinned or you pin honestly thats how that class goes, i wrestled in it last yr and pinned most of my guys but then got sick about 3 days before state and lost to some good kids, this yr hopefully ill do much better at state which is in 2 weeks, next thurs, fri. and sat to be exact, next week, this saturday is regionals, cant wait!

I have wrestled 4 girls in my day wrestling, tho i have never lost i had this one girl and i barely pulled out a win, beating her only by 2 points, so i mean girls in the sport now is a common thing, its rather exciting to see girls but bad at the same time, it really makes the sport more accepted with people if girls do it, but then again in todays society if you lose to a girl people think it makes them look bad so i mean it falls on both sides of the fence, wrestling is a sport like no other, truely an amazing sport if you take the time to watch it.

(Thats a bit better - GHS)

Yeah me too. I gave up after just a bit of it.

Actually when I saw that article what surprised me was the fact that she was the first girl to win a State Championship.

Well I hope that doesnt deter her Cash, thats cool that she won.

RHCP, whats better, a guy winning the state championship, or a girl...Which is the bigger achievement...? I think your post is merely to show off that you wrestle tbh. I dont like the fact you critised what is in fact a great achievement...

Ok RHCP I officially now don't like you, and I think you are a MORON. Girls naturally have a higher body fat % than boys, and they also don't have near as much testosterone in thier bodies as a teenage boy. Testosterone not only makes muscle but it allows you to be more aggressive. And if you say that strength doesn't matter in wrestling then you are really an idiot. Stregth and speed are very important. And muscle makes both.

This girl won state with most likely less muscle on her body than the boys she was wrestling against. She probably wasn't as fast as most of them either. That means that her skill level had to be higher because she was at a disadvantage of speed and strength and THAT is what is impressive. Someone who wins just because they are faster or stronger is not as impressive as someone winning because they are 'better'.

It is impressive that a girl won state, no matter what state its in. She overcame the disadvantage of the female body to beat out males that are by nature programmed hormonally to be the dominate physical sex.

Boys and girls, men and women, males and females are not the same and if a female beats a male in something physical that they are both supposed to be proficient in, that is impressive to me.

I awaiit your reply because you will probably have to find a new Dboard once you make it.

thats a shame, when prescilla (the girl from a local highschool) wins a tourny they say that she gets boos and she also gets cheers i havent personally seen her win cuz we have a 103 on our team that generally beats her and we go to diff tournaments then them except for conference/regionals, but besides that she wins an awful lot, but shes been wrestling for about 12 years so thats really compared to the boys, but congrats to your daughter, but you gotta remember when ever someone from the school the tourny is held at is in the finals and they lose generally the majority of the crowd is from that school, boos come way to often, last yr at state a kid won it and he LITERALLY no joke got bood by 75% of the crowed and guess what school the kid was from? ours... he got bood cuz he beat a guy that was "supposed" to win it... but like they say, no garuntees...

a girl of course, i mean the amount of girls compared to guys is tremendous, i mean it really is, there are only about 5,000 girls nationwide that wrestle, and to win state for anyone much less a girl is impressive...

see thats one misconception people have, strength does not garuntee you by any means a victory in wrestling, girls are naturally smarter then boys while boys are natuarlly stronger then girls, thats just how it seems to go, but at the 103 pound weight class which i wrestled last yr, strength does not play as big of part in the matches as speed and technique, and by some profesionals they say girls understand wrestling more when it comes down to the basics, and all it takes for you to be successful is doing the basics good, nothing fancy really, just basics...

her body fat just makes it easier for her to cut weight if she was even doing that, generally at the 103 weight class you go against 7th, 8th and 9th graders, occassionally you find a sophmore in highschool that is there and thats exactly what she is... shes a sophmore, because shes a girl and girls are generally lighter she has a easier time staying at 103, which can give her an advantage, while some guys are cutting and losing strength to get to 103 she just does her regular and makes it, advantage to her...

do not forget Alaska and Texas are the only 2 states that welcome girls into the wrestling, it is a 'Official' sport in both those states, i dont know why? but thats the rules, and because alaska is not as strong in wrestling as many states are it gives girls that much more of a opportunity to win state, because other states have so much competition its basically the luck of the draw when it comes to state seeding and bracketing

btw priscella the girl that wrestles for a local highschool has a very good chance of being in the finals this yr at state if she gets the right draw, because looking at her past matches and results she will most likely get 2nd at regionals behind our 103 pounder, which would put her on the opposite side of the bracket at state and they could very well meet up in the state finals, its a strong possibility, and shes about as strong as the boys, but she has her technique to carry her through thats why shes successful, shes gotten so respected that they treat her like a boy when it comes to the match, but afterwards they go back to flirting with her even tho they just got crushed by her lol its quite funny at times, they think shes awesome and shes nice to, double as good...

i have nothing against girls wrestling at all, tho it may have come off that i did, what i was saying was that Alaska is not as competitive when it comes to state and such, which gives the oppotunities for anyone to win a state title, girl or guy alike, now if it were a higher weight class and not 103 then the girls start to lose chances of winning just as you stated earlier with strength and such, but at that low class the competition isnt as stout because of the experience most of the guys have at that class, so if a girl has alot of exp. then she has a HUGE advantage over anyone with not so much exp. understand? experience is everything at that weight class, unless you find a kid that is way stronger and cuts alot of weight then hes generally a shoe in for the state title... unfair but it happens...

now i would like to apologize to anyone that took that the wrong way and such, i was just voicing my opinion and what i thought of the situation, its up to you whether is stay or go, becuz i would love to stay becuz i like these forums, but it is up to you, whatever you decide, i have made my case, thanks. *RHCP*

by the way the point of me telling you that i wrestle was not to show off at all, it was to make sure you understood that i had some background and knew what i was talking about because of experience, to make sure i was not pulling this from no where, just from past experiences

So someone with A LOT of experience at something is better than someone who doesn't have much experience?? Wow thanks for letting me know that without that infinite wisdom I would be a lost idiot.. I'm just trying to figure out why the girl was the only one in that weight class with a lot of experince as you are making it out.

Hmmm. I dont know much about wrestling. But RHCP did say something that got me thinking.

If she is 103 lbs and a sophmore then he is probly right about the fact that she would be wrestling boys much younger than her because of the weight rules in wrestling.

Now like I said I could be wrong, but that would give her an advantage over her oponents I would think and makes me less impressed that she Won state if she did so against 7th and 8th graders who may not even have hit puberty yet.

I dunno how they do things in Alaska, or in Ohio but in Iowa High school kids don't wrestle Junior high kids.. and state tourneys go by grade groups with a maximum age for that grade....

Strength does matter, just more in other weight classes then 103, i mean generally they are all weaker and just focus on the speed more than strength they build strength as they build fat and get bigger...

thats not what i meant when i said experience, of course someone with more experience would be better with someone with less experience, but sometimes that isnt that case lol with a few kids on our team for example... they just havnt gotten better for some reason? and 103's generally dont have the experience the high weights do because of how old they are, i mean a 7th grader or even 8th grader doesnt generally have more than 8-9 years experience, where as a 10th-12th grader has those extra years, thats vital experience, because practicing with high schoolers compared to middle schoolers is just insane with differences, just because of coaching generally

when i said "understand?" i was nto at all being sarcastic, rude, or mean, i was simply asking if you understood my points, i really dont understand why you got and are so mad at me? i mean i think you thought i was against all girl wrestlers (because your daughter) maybe you got defensive? im not sure, but that is not the case at all, i actually want more girls in the sport, i was just saying that we should actually accept them, i think in the future we will be seeing alot more females in wrestling and maybe even other sports? football maybe? we had a girl on our team earlier but she got harassed and eventually quit, but you never know, im sure a girl will go out for the team again

this is true, but its still impressive, going against odds, i mean there is 32 kids in a weight class at state, being number 1 out of the bunch is impressive even if she is a guy or girl

Alaska is nothing like Ohio, or Iowa for wrestling, see i wrestle both in Ohio and Kentucky, and Ohio completly is oon another level as kentucky, kentucky is not the best state for wrestling but it is getting competitive, alaska has some ways to go b4 its up to the notch for wrestling, none of the top 50 kids at all are from alaska, just about every state has one, hawaii or alaska doesnt at the moment, im not saying they cant eventually have one, but none have come along to get t hat nationally ranked spot yet, Iowa by what i have heard is also a incredible state for wrestling tho i have never been there to wrestle so i have no first hand experience

now for the age of kids, in Ohio kids cut 30+ pounds no joke, they do, i mean weight restrictions in ohio are so much different then alot of states, thats what really seperates ohio with rules, in kentucky generally you can only cut 20 pounds max, while ohio you can cut tons and tons, ohio is almost all seniors going to state in all weight classes, 103-275 all seniors, i mean you have some juniors and some sophmores and an occasional freshman, but for the most part its seniors, their in a whole nother league, simply amazing

oooooo yea, i looked him up in the Ohio state tourny last yr, he wrestles for Spring. Greenon? and he got 4th, thats very impressive for Ohio, i mean any division 2 guy or even division 3 could win state in Kentucky the level in ohio is just rediculous, wow very impressed by him, what weight is he going this yr? 130 again? or was he a senior?

im sure a college would take him in for wrestling, just depends if he wants to go through the tough road of college wrestling, some of the toughest stuff, im told my all my coachs they say its insanely hard, but if he wants to go that road then im sure someone will pick him up and be very glad they did

I know for a fact they don't in Ohio unless it's in practice when they have to share the gym. And even then it'd just be for fun.

hmmm in Ohio not so much, i mean if they are good enough to start on their team then they will its all about if you win the wrestle off, but generally the highschool kid will beat out a middle schooler in Ohio, but in Kentucky, its a whole different story, i mean last yr a kid in *8th* grade was in the finals... at 130 he is just a plain out great wrestler for the best team in state last yr and second if not first best team this yr, him being a freshman and hes ranked 2nd in state behind our teams guy at 130 (who is one of the best wrestlers in state none the less at 130 tho he cuts from 145)

i mean there is a kid in my region at 112 pounds and hes a 8th grader, they say it will be me and him in the finals at regionals, this yr i have lost to him once and beat him once, and both times it has been 3-1 him and then 5-3 me, so i mean its a CLOSE CLOSE match everytime, exciting matches for sure, im a junior hes an 8th grader, thats how serious they take middle school in kentuck, it really raises the level at times for high school guys to keep their varsity spots, btw hes only lost 10 matches this yr where i have only lose 6, so i mean were close in record to, hes very talented

exactly, but there was one time i remember where a middle school had a chance to wrestle off a kid from my cousins school (St. X in cinci ohio) and he beat him! it was amazing for that 8th grader but the 8th grader went to one tourny and got crushed so he just let the high schooler have his spot back, thats what my cousin was telling me, not sure if its exactly true or not in that exact manner but it seemed like it might be able to happen, my cousin doesnt wrestle hes a baseball stud...

Girls in Jerzee are much to focused on looking right to wrestle, which is good because I dont' want to run into any who think they can whoop my ***, lol.

Sorry had to change it alittle to ease the tension =p

There is a girl in Indiana doing the same thing right now. And i know she could whoop my butt anyday. And i'm pretty sure she's wrestling a range of sophomores to seniors. I know of a lot of guys that are around that weight class and they dont wrestle junior high kids.

what weight class do you know? if higher then 103 then that makes alot of sense, not all of the kids are junior high kids, but quite a few of them are, i mean in the kentucky state tourny there is generally 10-15 guys at 103 in junior high, thats a lot of kids for a 32 man bracket

lots of schools dont, and some schools do, we have 2 of them on our team actually, none of which start but the 2 come and work with our 103 pounder so that he doesnt just have to wrestle me the whole time and get someone more his size, they wrestle JV for a team to sometimes and they do very well, it really depends if you need certain spots filled and how good the middle schoolers are in your area like local middle school cuz if their good enough to start varsity then they should be there, best wrestler wrestles varsity...
