In the absence of a gaming system due to selling my xBox on ebay to purchase a nonexistent Nintendo Wii, I decided to pick up NFL Head Coach for $20 at a local Target to fill my football gaming urges. So far, I pretty much love the game, aside from the fact that they still have 55 player caps in the off-season, among other annoyances.
I am of coarse the coach of the Green Bay Packers. I’m a defense-based coach with a balanced offense scheme and a cover 2 defense scheme. So far I’ve made my way through the grueling off-season, and have played the first preseason game. The off-season was good to me as I picked up some key players in FA and the Draft.
In FA I went ahead on got a pair of solid guards in Dan Neil and Chris Terry. I added some veteran leadership to the linebacking corps by picking up Anthony Simmons and Jay Farrior. I also did some work on the special teams with the additions of punter Todd Sauerbrun and return man Az-Zahir Hakim.
The draft was interesting to say the least. I was really hoping I could follow suit and pick up A.J. Hawk, but the Texans picked him as the first pick of the draft. I was quite upset by this until Reggie Bush somehow fell to 5th, and then became a Packer.
My second pick was CB Jimmy Williams, who at 6’2” 213lbs shows a lot of potential. His top potential at this point is about 82, which is still higher than Ahmad “hands in the facemask” Carroll.
Third I chose center Nick Mangold, at the advise of my scouting coach. He looks like he will be a great rookie to back up either the guards or the center. He could be a starter next year.
In the forth, I got a sleeper in linebacker Lonnie Scott. He is a big kid at 6’2” 242lbs and by the time the first preseason came around, he won a spot as starting ROLB, beating Farrior.
After that it gets a bit up and down. I picked up a MLB with good strength that I’ve moved to RE to try and create a poor mans KGB, so I can trade the real KGB. I also picked up a SS just to fill the roster, but he isn’t very good. In the seventh I got a WR that was pretty much worthless and has been cut.
The preseason was a bit tedious, but I simmed as little as possible. It gave me a good feel for how the team really is and what I need to do to get them going. I made several attempts to trade for Hawk, but now the Texans GM always answers the phone with something like, “what do you want now?”
I coached my first preseason game last night. I trounced the Chargers, 38 to 13. My defense caused 4 interceptions (2 for Harris, Barnett 1, Collins 1) and the offense gained over 400 yards. About half way through the 3rd quarter, I put in all the backups, but the Chargers kept their first team in the whole game. The only big play they had was a big LT TD run for about 50 yards against the 2nd string, but even given that run we kept him to 86 yards. Reggie Bush averaged 5.5 YPC and Javon Walker (yeah... I'm not trading him) had a pair of catches, one going for a 60 yard score from Aaron Rogers.
I’ll update this as I can, as I think I’m really going to get into this game. It has just the right pace to allow for updates as well. Maybe I’ll post the stats of the games and do press conference style Q & A's, if anyone is interested in participating.
Hmm... Get rid of Green, and I'll see how I like it.
The game gets REALLY repetitive after a while... which is why I stopped playing it.

I'd love to be giving an update right now, but I just quit playing for a bit cause the game day is so jerky. It takes forever just for the guys to line up to the LOS. I've tried updating my drivers, turning the games visual settings all the way down, uping the virtual memory... does anyone else have any ideas to help this run more smoothly?

First off, I always find a good way to make friends on a message board is to call them dumb. Congratulations, you’ve insulted just about everyone here.
Here is the thing. If you look around this board, you will notice that there is an emphasis on quality posting. Members of this board like to take the time to formulate arguments and present them in a logical, well-written matter. Because of this, some members become annoyed when new members come to the board and offer half witted, poorly typed comments on threads they have started.
I’m sure that you have the mental capacity to spell words correctly and properly punctuate your posts. The fact that you refuse to properly post your thoughts introduces the notion that you are either a child who thinks the style you use is cool or you are so lazy, you can’t manage to muster the strength to move your right ring finger down one row to tap the period on your keyboard. I can only hope for the first option, for I couldn’t bear to believe that we live in a world with such sloth. I then feel I should offer a young person some direction with a bit of advise…. looking like an idiot is NOT cool.
I hope you decide to stick around and put forth some effort on this board, cause we don’t have enough Packer fans here. If you decide to stick around, I’ll do what I can to help you out, but only on the condition that you use proper spelling and punctuation (which I will also help with if that is an issue.)
Either way, I’m just going to answer your question so we can move on from this. I bought Head Coach for PC. It doesn't work well because I have a cheap PC, so now I'm out $20 because I don't feel like spending 2 hours to coach a game with 5 minute quarters.
