The History: Over its 77 year existence, Woodrow has reached the playoffs just 12 times compiling an overall record of 357-408-24. The best showing the team has had was to get to the Semfinals in 1939, 1948, 1953, and 1969. Up until 2002 and our football program had been especially bad, making the playoffs only once since 1984. The past few years things had been different.
Two years ago, we came into the season with high expectations. After finishing 3rd in the district, we were matched up against Hebron in the first round. Hebron had gone undefeated, had only trailed once all season, and had won each of its games by at least 35 points. On the night where we played them, everything went our way as we beat them 44-15. (NOTE: This year, Hebron went undefeated and won the state championship and has since moved to 5A) Our second round match up was against Wylie, the team that had knocked us out the year before by the score of 35-7. I remember the whole school was buzzing the Monday before, not just because of the win, but because our game was to be played at Texas Stadium. Unfortunately, with our 2 starting cornerbacks out due to injury, our secondary was picked apart, and we lost 56-35.
We came into last year ranked 14th in the DFW area. We finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record, thanks to Sergio Kindle and the defense, who allowed an average of only 6 points a game. In the first round, we faced Lake Dallas, a team we had beaten in the second week 30-20. This game, they had shut down Sergio, but our defense had held them. With only a minute left to play, we lead 13-10. They had the ball though, on our side of the fifty. On a 3rd down play, the QB threw a ball that bounced right of a receivers hands and it to the hands of Kendric Lee, our strong safety. For a third staright year we were going to the second round, and for a third straight year, we got to face the Wylie Pirates. The game looked so promising, we were healthy, and our secondary was strong. We KNEW we had this game. With two minutes left to play in the first half, we lead 31-0. Although they kicked a FG before the half, we still felt great. However, they scored twice on wide receiver reverse passes. I honestly couldn’t tell you anything else about that game. We somehow lost, 41-38. Sergio Kindle had 312 yards rushing, 15 tackles, and we lost. It was honestly, the most heart-wrenching thing I’ve ever been a part of…
At least if we get that far this year, we won’t have to worry about Wylie, who is now a 5A school.
Defense:
Jack Hlavaty: 121 tackles, 47 TFL
Greg Mccoy: 3 INT’s
Kendric Lee: 6 INT’s
Sam Ashbrook: 89 tackles
The Outlook:
Life without Mr. Kindle. Wow. I honestly hope for the best. But this guy, I can’t even explain it, he was amazing. On offense, we return our quarterback, Kevin Rusk (5-11, 190, 4.6), our top receiver, Greg McCoy (5-11, 175, 4.4), and 2 offensive lineman: Ryan Gunter, and Jordan Pleasants (6-2, 260, 5.1) . We have two areas of question: Who’s the RB, and what happens with the O-line. The halfback position will be filled by the trio of Brandon Dora (5-11, 190, 4.5), Rodney Malone (5-10, 160, 4.5), and Damien Washington. Dora and Calvin Walker (5-11, 240, 4.9… Brother of Sergio Kindle) will split time at the FB position which lost Larry Phillips, a three year starter. The O-line will add Preston Richmond (6-2, 240)- a transfer from St. Marks, a Dallas private school and will give the remaining two spots to Sophomores. Opposite of Greg Mccoy at WR will be either Kendric Lee (6-0, 195) or Farrow Bowman (5-8, 160), another transfer.
The defensive line should return in force. Calvin Walker, a 2 year starter, and 2 years All-dsitrict player will anchor the line with Cesar Carillo, and Louis Davies, who split time last year. The linebacking corp, that lost Sergio Kindle, and Terrrance Johnson will return Jack Hlavaty (6-4, 225, 4.7) who will play alongside Brandon Dora, and Kendric Lee, who moved from safety. The secondary, which should be a strong point, will have Farrow Bowman, Greg McCoy, Rodney Malone, and Sam Asbbrook (6-2, 187, 4.5), and either Galen Ollison,a junior, or Philip Harris, a junior.
Schedule: (Last years record, and WW’s last result against) *Denotes District Game
* Atlanta- (4-6, no prior matchup)
* Fort Worth Trimble Tech- (2-8, 2003-LOSS, 34-22)
* Seagoville- (5-5, 2005-WIN, 42-7)
vs. Dallas A. Maceo Smith- (3-7, 1999-LOSS, 37-34)
* *North Dallas- (1-9, 2005-WIN, 56-7)
vs. *Hillcrest- (6-5 [lost in 1st round of playoffs, 31-15], 2005- WIN, 35-7)
* *Dallas Samuell- (3-7 [Results in 5A], 2001- LOSS, 17-0)
vs. *Thomas Jefferson- (0-10, 2005-WIN, 77-0)
* *Dallas Lincoln- (7-4 [lost to eventual State Champs in 1st round, 42-12], 2005-WIN, 28-7)
vs. *Dallas Spruce- (4-6, 2005-WIN, 41-0)
As you can see, our schedule only has a few tough games.
Rankings: (Ranking is of DFW area 4A schools, of which there are approximately 70)
Dallas Morning News- 15
Texas Prep Xtra- 15
Prediction: Well, seeing as we have a relatively soft schedule, I don’t forsee any difficulty in making the playoffs. Lincoln and Hillcrest should provide us with our greatest challenges and those should both be good games. The Dallas Morning News predicted Woodrow to finish second behind Lincoln.
Whew… Ok, I’ll post other things such as the roster, etc. when I get them.
Great article! I loved reading this, Matt my friend, you have the most high school football spirirt I have ever seen!
That Sergio Kindle kid is the readl deal huh? What position will he play at Texas? He looked good as a RB. Also, Wylie screwed y'all on those two plays. I hate fakes...LOL!

That was really cool to read...love the spirit you've got there Matt.
The high school I went to was definitely a football school (one of few schools in the area without rugby because the football coaches didn't want their stars hurt...football players got 90s in Phys. Ed. for standing around talking to the teacher/coach during class among countless other "benefits/exemptions"), but being in Canada the intensity/commitment of the fans for the high school teams is nowhere near as great as I've seen in the US.
Man... and I thought my Laser Tag and Franchises were in depth, Matt > Me.
Looks great man. Keep it up

For Madden people the best way to explain it is that he has a very low awareness.
In the first game of this young season, Woodrow came in knowing they were facing a tough challenge. Although the Atlanta Rabbits were a 3A team, they were only two years removed from a team that won the state championship. The 4-6 record they compiled last year was more of a reflection of the tough schedule they played than anything else. Needless to say this game wasn't going to be easy.
NOTE: Due to my grandmother's death, I was unable to attend this game. For other weeks I will do my own write-up but for this one, I can only give stats...
1st Quarter:
WW: 33 yard pass from Kevin Rusk to Greg McCoy (Steven Allen kick)
WW: Brandon Dora 83 yard run (Steven Allen kick)
WW: 69 yard pass from Kevin Rusk to Greg McCoy (Steven Allen kick)
End of Quarter 1 Woodrow Wilson 21 Atlanta 0
2nd Quarter:
ATL: 31 yard pass from Donta McNeely to Brandon Stiger (Tyler Stuart kick)
WW: Greg McCoy 25 yard fumble return (Steven Allen kick)
Halftime Woodrow Wilson 28 Atlanta 7
3rd Quarter:

End of 3rd Quarter Woodrow Wilson 28 Atlanta 7
4th Quarter:
WW: Sam Ashbrook 17 yard fumble return (Kick failed)
ATL: 22 yard pass from Donta McNeely to Marquese Davis (Tyler Stuart Kick)
Game Stats
First Downs: 10
Rushing Yards: 23-191
Passing Yards: 178
Passing: 10-15-0
Punts-Avg: 1-35.0
Penalties: 8-60
Fumbles-lost: 1-0
Notes:DL Ceasar Carillo forced both fumbles... RB Damien Washington was injured... Kevin Rusk threw more passses in one game, than in any one game all of last year... Woodrow stayed at #15 in DFW's 4A poll...
How other teams on the schedule fared:
Fort Worth Trimble Tech- IDLE Seagoville- WON 27-0 over Thomas Jefferson A. Maceo Smith- IDLE North Dallas- LOST 45-18 to Molina Hillcrest- LOST 18-14 to Sherman (Fell to #20 in DFW 4A poll) Samuell- WON 7-6 over Bryan Adams Thomas Jefferson- LOST 27-0 to Seagoville Lincoln- IDLE (Stayed at #12 in DFW poll) Spruce- WON 33-2 over Sunset
And 2 final things, first I have the roster, just need to get it in a presentable format, and secondly, when I post stats, should I post the opponents stats as well?
Damn Matt... I'm hoping for the best for you... it hurt loosing anyone...

Coming off an early season win, Woodrow looked to keep the momentum going against a Trimble Tech team that had been struggling the past few years. Things wouldn't get much better this game for the team from Fort Worth. They found out that when you fumble 9 times (5 recovered by Woodrow) and ultimately lose the turnover battle by 6, a win can be hard to come by. Woodrow scored on their first posssession and never let up. After Rodney Malone returned a Trimble Tech INT for a TD on the ensuing possession, you knew that this game wasn't to be close. Woodrow scored early, and often, jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead. Two TD's in the second half, cemented an easy win. The Wildcats were lead by Sr. running back Brandon Dora, who rushed 13 times for 170 yards, and 3 TD's. The defense didn't allow Trimble Tech to get much going, allowing just 173 total yards.
Yeah... That wasn't my best... Not a whole lot to write about in a 55-0 game.

Both Seagoville, and Woodrow Wilson came into there third game of the season at 2-0. Seagoville was trying to beat Woodrow Wilson for the first time since 1998, Woodrow was just trying to keep the momentum rolling. The game started off great for the Wildcats as Greg McCoy returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for the score. On Seagoville's ensuing possession, Quarterback Troy Stoudemire's pass was picked off by LB/RB Brandon Dora, who returned it 32 yards for the score. It took almost the whole first quarter, but Woodrow's offense was finally able to get on the field. They weren't there for long- Brandon Dora took the handoff 80 yards for the TD, to put Woodrow up 21-0. After a few incompletions, the Wildcats went back to doing what they do best, pounding the football. Kevin Rusk capped off the drive with a 7 yard scamper that put the Wildcats up 28. The Dragons appeared to regain some momentum on their next drive as they took the ball 70 yards down the field and scored. With under two minutes remaining, Woodrow got the ball back. A two minute passing offense directed by Kevin Rusk, which included 4 completions, quickly moved Woodrow down the field. On a third and goal play, Kevin Rusk found Rodney Malone on the out pass to put Woodrow up 28. The second half was no better for the Dragons of Seagoville. Their offense couldn't stay on the field and their defense couldn't get off fast enough. The Seagoville defense was taken apart for 26 first downs, and 396 yards. Woodrow added 2 more scores in the second half. Kevin Rusk-with another rushing TD- amassed over 200 total yards and 3 TD's for the day and outplayed his counterpart, Troy Stoudemire, who could only go 6-14, and gain 130 total yards. The final score, 49-7, showcased the Wildcats continued dominance of the Dragons. Next week, Woodrow faces off against another DISD foe, A. Maceo Smith (0-3).

Man, we were in the same district as Percy Harvin... and there was only one team that could get shutout like that... not a team that dominates another team like that...
like 3 years ago... there was a game we had, Princess Anne vs. Green Run.. the final score was like 80 to 6. PA scored on EVERY possession.
