Eliminate the Overall rating stat, it takes away from actual player abilities to accommodate one rating (i.e. lower awareness or other skills because it would cause an inflated overall rating). Awareness itself should be broken into such things as instincts, knowledge (perfect rating to be set low for rookies), preparation, consistency, work ethic and execution. There should be more general stats like consistency, clutch, leadership, but more importantly position specific ratings (QB example: Deep Ball, Play Action, and Mobile Accuracy).
My favorite wants… I would like to see actual numbers in the ratings, I mean we get 40 times and bench press numbers during the draft, but these numbers are turned into generic ratings. These could also lead to more variety than 12-99 that could further help separate player skills, by not necessarily setting a ceiling and a floor for ratings. With the “real” ratings, throw us a “freak” athlete in the draft (Calvin Johnson would lose his 45” vertical because it would be represented as 99 or 41”) that has one or two ratings not in the normal span. This would create a greater degree of seperation among players.
I know people will need something to determine overall value or trade value, so how about “Production and Potential Meters”. These meters could help affect stat progression as well as help to eliminate the awful trading done in Madden. Works like so… Production is obviously “what have you done for me lately”, and the point value could be related to individual stats similiar to Fantasy Football (RB get 5 pts for every 100 yards and 2 pts for TDs, etc.) thereby adding points to the Production meter. The Potential will place added value on youth and previous progressions (players that have made constant improvement versus no or negative progression). Example: This could eliminate trading freshly signed free agents (lack of production) for established talent (production) and create the ability to trade for different combinations of the two (I would, however, have Production outweigh Potential on say a “3:2” margin). Throw back in the Icon Status to create un-tradable players such as Manning, Brady, and LT. This combination could make trades more real based on needs and depth. It would also add an aspect of actually having to making GM decisions and using all of these factors to determine the depth chart, versus the highest overall wins.
Make Chemistry (Patriots) a factor in team ratings, a team with a lot of players with high ratings in work ethic, consistency, execution, leadership will probably be more cohesive than a team littered with inconsistent, lazy players. Have players fit into certain schemes better than others which would be directly related to their ratings (3-4 vs. 4-3 D-line/Linebackers, Cover 2 vs. Man, West Coast vs. Vertical). A quarterback with a weaker arm is more affective in a West Coast team than a Vertical passing team. Players placed into systems not fitting their style could cost them rating points in the Potential Meter and others such as the instincts, knowledge, and execution (of course ratings could take varied damage based on age, players with remaining high potential meters could possibly make the adjustment much quicker and easier).
These ideas came to me yesterday and I kind of want to know if they are crazy or something that all of us that want real football could be intrigued by.
Thanks
