I think it's a great idea. One big difference I think would be best would be instead of just having the same 14 attributes for everyone you could just do specific position ones in addition to the physical ones. No reason a lineman needs punting or throwing, that is just pointless space.
My biggest question is the ability for the server(s) to hold all this, but you know a lot more about it that I do.
